Get the heat above the atmosphere, and space itself becomes the heatsink. The hard part is the beanstalk (aka: Tsiolkosvsky Tower, orbital tether or Space elevator). The concept is simple (has been around since 1895): Superstrong cable(s) mounted at the equator extending out WELL past geostationary orbit range with a counterweight at the far end. As long as the center of mass is above the geostationary level, it would never fall. We just dont (currently) have the materials to build it. It could provide a heat transfer device, easy access to space, and a good 'jumping off' point at the counterwieght (as you'd be past the stationary point). |

Monday, June 20, 2011 1:12:03 PM gcghost-"Your explanation of how an AC works is retarded!" Actually, his basic theory is correct. You can not cool down air, you can only remove the heat from it. Air's natural state it Cold. With no outside contamination, Air would be ~ -273°C. When the Air temperature is, say, 90° but you want it cooler, you use an Air Conditioner to remove heat until that air feels cooler. That heat is dissapated at some other point (evaporator), along with the heat created by the A/C unit. The overall effect is you generate more heat, but not in the room you're in. And DrProfessor was right, just did not express it well. The process does not create more heat than it removed from the air. What he meant (I think) is that the amount of heat removed PLUS the heat created by the unit results in a net increase, overall. |

Air conditioners,even at their most innefficient,have never produced more heat than they take away. If they did, we wouldn't have air conditioning at all. They'd be called heaters. It's not enough to put your thinking cap on, you have to use it as well. |

Any heat that is in space gets dissipated into the vaccuum very quickly. Ever wonder why comets are always made of ice? Now, there are magnitudes more photons (aka light waves/particles) in space than ever make it to earth. If an astronaut looks at the sun without his gold reflector on, he will instantly be blinded, and his eyes burned out. Thus, a hole in the ozone allows tons more photons through (they are normally "filtered" thorugh the atmosphere). In essence, the atmosphere shields us from being roasted alive by the torrent of photons that the sun hurls at us. That said, I still don't believe global warming is a big deal (yet, at least). I think it's a ploy by liberals/scientists to scare people into funding them. |

If it was that cold, the earth would be all icy. Plus, global warming cant be stopped. The earth is like a rotisserrie chicken over the grill that is the sun. Hell, if you leave anything in the sun long enough, it gets really goddamn hot. The earth is in direct sunlight 24/7 for billions of years. Whats up? |

Friday, June 17, 2011 10:05:15 PM You can not make heat dissapear into "nothing" and generate cold from "nothing". Air conditioning works by gathering all the heat in a room and dumping it outside. That is why they are installed on windows or ventilation ducts. It just moves heat from A to B. If you put it outside, it will still blow out cold air, but the air will flow backwards and cool the conditioner pipes, which have gathered all of the heat and are trying to blow it the other way. The result is that the hot and cold will diffuse with eachother again and equilibrium is achieved. |
