I live in Yosemite National Park, same as Dean Potter. He does this kind of stuff *a lot*. There are no tricks, no magic wires, nothing up his sleeve. While he's arguably the best at what he does, he is still just a plain 'ol climber/park bum who spends his days doing basically what you see in the video. He frequently uses parachutes, sometimes even uses this "bat suit" that allows him to glide across the valley to the floor below. One of his feats that really impresses the kids here was his climb of El Capitan, Half Dome, and some other equally massive bit in *one day*. Most people take several days to do El Cap alone. The guy is a friggin' rock star around here, if he goes to buy a pizza over in Curry Village, the kids inside start wiggin' out "YEAH!!! I'm makin DEAN POTTER'S FRIGGIN' PIZZA!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Just watched both of them. Wow - very stressful during the original, good song choice for its replacement (and a vaster sense of thrill). Amazing.

"The subtitle is wrong..." -Sorry, fixed! I just used the description from the youtube vid.

"The video you've used is blocked in some countries, including mine. Which is a bit amusing for a video posted in my name. For all I know, it's a video of ufos and cats :)" -Gah! I hate that! Bloody copyright bollocks. Unfortunately there's no way to know from one location (I'm in Canada) whether it's blocked in other countries - I had a good dig for a version that allows embedding and this was the only one I could find. And your hunch was correct, the Channel 4 link you posted on the same thread only works in the UK.

For those who can't see it here, you should be able to watch Ang's original post on youtube:

Just in case davymid has linked to the trailer for the TV program (or anyone finds the trailer on Youtube):

You see him falling with a parachute. It's a misleading clip because he doesn't wear a parachute when slacklining. You can clearly see that if you watch him doing it, as he's only wearing a pair of shorts. The parachute clip comes from a BASE jump he did in which he slacklined into the middle of a canyon and jumped from there.

He is using support from some kind of very fine wires to keep him from falling.

Yeah, magic wires that nobody has ever seen, attached to magic invisible ships floating above him. Probably alien technology...no, wait, he's using tractor beams! Of course, it's obvious.

I like the way you consistently confidently state complete twaddle. It's amusing, which isn't boring.

What he actually does is this:

1) Set the slackline up.
2) Walk it half a dozen times wearing a harness that's tethered to the line.
3) Take the harness and tether off and walk it again, completely unprotected.

Rationally, doing it without a tether is the same as doing it with a tether. So if he didn't fall off while wearing the tether, he won't fall off while not wearing it. That's the mental technique he uses.

Of course, there's actually a hell of a difference between "if you fall you've failed this time, try again" and &qu

Anyways, just trying to give credit where credit's due, which is why I posted this under your name, in case you were wondering where the hell this came from...

I saw the title and assumed that someone else had seen it when I posted it, submitted it and had it accepted. I didn't notice my name - I don't bother submitting suggestions any more and never did many anyway.

I don't mind because you made the first post explaining what you've done.

Although a couple of minor things:

The subtitle is wrong. He isn't using a tightrope. He's using a slackline, which is *much* harder.

The video you've used is blocked in some countries, including mine. Which is a bit amusing for a video posted in my name. For all I know, it's a video of ufos and cats :)

On-topic: I'm even more impressed that he managed to do this without tripping up over his massive, globular balls.

A note to Angilion: You posted a similar link on the thread on slacklining a while back, and it was pretty awesome. Thought it would be worthwhile posting as an item on its own.

Hope you don't mind that I've taken the liberty of posting it in your name, even though you didn't actually submit it as a post. Also, this isn't the original Channel 4 item which you posted, that video didn't allow embedding. It's essentially the same footage with a different audio track.

Anyways, just trying to give credit where credit's due, which is why I posted this under your name, in case you were wondering where the hell this came from...
