Sam-- regardless of the tar amount, nicotine paralyze the cilia lining your lungs while you are smoking. These cilia "wash" out your lungs by moving in a sweeping motion to get everything to your upper lungs, where you cough it out. When these cilia aren't moving, everything you're inhaling can get deeper into your airways and spread throughout your body that way.

Marijuana, as far as I know doesn't contain nicotine. I don't know really anyone that mixes their weed with tobacco, unless they are low or have potent weed and are rolling a joint. That's just around me, obviously I don't know what people do elsewhere.

Since weed isn't regulated--no one knows for sure what they are smoking. So you can't say smoking a random bag of weed will leave you with these side effects or without these side effects. People use all three drugs to feel better and they all pose health risks. Bah.

In my particular case MJ makes me insanely focused; I'm actually a hell of a lot more thorough with any task.

@WetSquirrel I'm dumb because I research on the internet to find facts about weed from reliable sources, instead of listening to hearsay or people's assumptions and opinions? with regards mental health, weed is worse. physical health, cigarettes are worse, simply because people smoke more cigarettes than joints. I know what weed does to you, I smoked so much at university I became addicted to it. Every morning I woke up, I would have a bong because I wanted that high again. Also considering tobacco is the main ingredient of a joint, there is no difference. I've seen friends start on weed, then they go onto ecstasy and speed, ketamine, acid and then finally heroin or cocaine. It's not nice to see.

Sam, you seem to be a complete dumbass of a tool, so you'll probably never change your opinion on weed. Only advice I can give you is to go smoke a joint, then smoke a cigarette.
Once you've smoked both, try saying cigarettes are healthier than weed...

@66stang Considering I'm not in a position to do these studies myself, the only place I can get this 'bs' from are those that have actually done the research already.
Marijuana smoke and cigarette smoke contain many of the same toxins, including one which has been identified as a key factor in the promotion of lung cancer. This toxin is found in the tar phase of both, and it should be noted that one joint has four times more tar than a cigarette, which means that the lungs are exposed four-fold to this toxin and others in the tar. It has been concretely established that smoking cigarettes promotes lung cancer...so obviously the conclusion is that smoking marijuana can cause cancer as well. That's just common sense. btw it is highly unlikely weed smokers would change from smoking it to eating it only.

Wow, sam1002, eat up the all the bs they feed ya huh?
In 1999 200,000 people entered treatment for marijuana. What they don't tell you is this. If you are arrested for marijuana the judge is 99% likely to give you the option of treatment over jail time.
Marijuana has 3 times more tar than tobacco, yet not one case of cancer has been linked to marijuana.
Also, if lung infections are SUCH a concern for you there is more than one way of ingestion.
i'll leave you with this statistic.
deaths per year
Alcohol 150,000
Tobacco 450,000
Asprin (including deliberate overdose) 200-1000+
Caffeine 5000
Legal drugs (prescription) 27,000
Marijuana 0

@ wolfncoyote. BTW Harvard University is not the only researcher on Marijuana
* I. B. Adams and BR Martin, "Cannabis: Pharmacology and Toxicology in Animals and Humans" Addiction 91: 1585-1614. 1996.

*Dr. James Dobson, "Marijuana Can Cause Great Harm" Washington Times, February 23, 1999.
* Harvard University researchers report that the risk of a heart attack is five times higher than usual in the hour after smoking marijuana.

* Users can become dependent on marijuana to the point they must seek treatment to stop abusing it. In 1999, more than 200,000 Americans entered substance abuse treatment primarily for marijuana abuse and dependence.
* The risk of using cocaine has been estimated to be more than 104 times greater for those who have tried marijuana than for those who have never tried it.
* Researchers have determined ammonia levels were 20 times higher in marijuana smoke than in tobacco smoke, while hydrogen cyanide, nitric oxide and certain aromatic amines occurred at levels 3-5 times higher in the marijuana smoke.
* Scientists were able to provide evidence that the marijuana smoke component Aldehyde was able to damage DNA, a known carcinogen and chemical found in marijuana smoke.

* Studies show that marijuana smoke has been found to contain more cancer-causing agents than is found in tobacco smoke.
* Marijuana contains more than 400 chemicals, including most of the harmful substances found in tobacco smoke. Smoking one marijuana cigarette deposits about four times more tar into the lungs than a filtered tobacco cigarette.
* The risk of a heart attack is five times higher than usual in the hour after smoking marijuana.
*Smoking marijuana also weakens the immune system4 and raises the risk of lung infections.5 A Columbia University study found that a control group smoking a single marijuana cigarette every other day for a year had a white-blood-cell count that was 39 percent lower than normal, thus damaging the immune system and making the user far more susceptible to infection and sickness.

Nicotine, Alcohol, and Cannabis are all *drugs*

Even caffeine is a drug.

To call someone a 'burnt out druggie' is quite daft and ignorant. (also, i've never heard of burnt-out potheads [except in movies])

Also, there are other ways to ingest cannabis, smoking it is the only way it is harmful to you.

Conclusion: my main point for this essay is because like the prohibition era people went to black markets and other dangerous methods of getting contraband and often caused mafias and real criminals to make all thhe money. If weed was legal, thered be no shady dealers with guns or gangs killing eachother because of selling competition. The smoke itself is harmful but not the plant vapor. It has less addictive properties but it shoud not be used if you are irresponsible and will become dependant on it for its effects. Im somewhat hooked to caffeine because it lifts me up but i dont overdo it. In closing, weed can be considered a healthier choice but it is shot down and demonized and most underground organizations and paranoid armed gangs are based around weed because of its being illegal and use that to make money.

m16andpregz: Cigarettes do have chemicals added to them that make them more addictive, but there are naturally addictive properties in tobacco. There are nicotinic receptors in the brain where nicotine can bind instead of acetylcholine, the chemical that is supposed to bind there. Something can be natural and bad for you. Botulism is natural, but that doesn't mean you want to ingest it.

Marijuana is not thought to be physically addictive, but that doesn't mean that people can't get addicted to it or that it is good for you. Psychological addiction is still possible (where a person says s/he can quit any time, but won't) and there are still side effects of inhaling smoke into your lungs. Our lungs are designed to handle a certain mix and concentration of chemicals typically found in the air and smoke does not fit into that category. Lung tissue is rather delicate, and inhaling any kind of smoke can kill off lung cells.
