LordJim: The reason people came to America from Europe was for the freedom to express themselves and worship as they please, America's 1st amendment guarantees freedom of expression and worship.
Other countries with other religions, most notably islam, do deny freedom of expression, but painting all 'religion' with the same wide brush of subjection is not accurate. |

Dictionary definitions record usage and are not really useful beyond that. Your link cites 'consumerism is the new religion' but if it were being widely said that 'Moisturising is the ew religion' tht would also find its way into the dictionary, but would that be remorely helpful in a real discussion?

Some certainly preach it like it is, and God help you if you're a 'heretic' in their eyes. anyone that believes in Religion is seen as a pariah, parochial, outmoded, and non-intelligent. It's a damn shame because modern civilization owes most of it's morality, freedom, and culture to the desire for free expression of faith. |

Baalthazaq: Atheism is not having a religion. That's it. Im sorry to get back to a cliche, but calling atheism a religion is like calling bald a hair color, or death a lifestyle, or sanity a mental disease (no pun intended).
Plus, attempting to argue against something by bringing it down to your level says a lot about how you regard your position. |

Has fair points, but as far as the point of this vid? None. Religious nutters are going to be religious nutters, no matter what you say to them. The more you say you say to them that you reject religion, the stronger it makes their faith. There are people out there that truly believe that a supernatural force is babysitting them. There's no proof against or for it. No point in preaching either way. Live and let live. |

CYBERDYNE: I live in Denton now and most of my family lives in Dallas. It doesn't happen here, but my aim wasn't so much Texas (I love this state) but small town life, where persecution is still pretty common. Hell, there was still a KKK just a few miles out from where I lived. Thing is, the south is the bible belt, so less urban parts of it tend to be less forgiving. So no, don't feel so attacked. |

Damn, he's sassy.
Truth is, I agree with him. Yes, he's being quite preachy. Thing is though, I'm sure he's just tired of being told the ever-so passive-agressive "I'll pray for you/your soul". I lived in a small town in Texas for 20 years. One question I was asked over and over was "what church do you go to?", just in friendly conversation. When I answered, "Oh, I don't. I'm agnostic.", It was almost always followed by "Huh. Well I'll pray that you find your way then." It's incredibly insulting and close-minded. I don't condone mocking any folk who wholeheartedly put themselves into their beliefs, but I can understand where this kind of frustration can come from. |
