Never, not once in my life, did I think I would find something that I could agree with 5Cats on.

But I just did.

Good sir, I will give you an internet handshake for that one.

I'd like to weigh in on this as a person with Dutch nationality (from their colonies) who lived through out the Netherlands for 15 years.

Fox news is right to point out Holland is indeed a mess. But its not because of the pot and prostitution laws, those are a minor facet of life there. (Disclosure: I am a dedicated weed consumer myself, and grower.)

Holland is, IMO, like Soviet empire or the Nazi empire. (Not many native Dutch people feel this way cause they are used to it.) Every aspect of your life and exitence is regulatd and controlled by the goverment. The amount of time you spend interacting with the goverment, avoiding fines, paying fines, and the like is immesureable. The goverment there is all powerfull. Even their social policies are another way to concentrate more power & money in the goverment. The citizen is simply a cog in the machine. And the cogs are less rebelious when stoned and satiated.

PS> Holland has the worst youth alcoholism +

It's still a growing problem there, even if the crime rate is lower than the US, Thus why they are closing so many 'coffee shops'.

We'll see what time will unfold.

The point being is that criminals will exploit marijuana legalization as much as they do prohibition now.

Technically marijuana IS illegal in Holland, but as their policy goes, if they can't ban they regulate. Seeing as they're trying to enforce the ban by shutting down the dealers who AREN'T going invest that income in guns so again the coffee shops turn to the black market.

there still isn't

Large enough for the cartels to control Mexico apparently.

davymid: I see a lot of people from Europe chastising the USA here daily, and I don't EVER see you tell them "Go visit a country, then talk sh*t about it."

CJ, my apologies, I didn't make myself very clear. When I said that, I was addressing specifically the "talking heads" in the video, not users that are expressing an opinion on the subject. You are correct, this is the internet, and people are free to express their opinions on any subject without censorship or chastisement. Also, most Europeans I know have been to America (family vacations and whatnot), and those that haven't and talk sh*t about the place based on nothing are just being trollsome.

On a personal note, I've been there literally dozens of times (family vacations in Florida, I'm in Houston about four times a year, best vacation I ever had was touring the SouthWest for a month), and I love America. It has some of the most polite, decent and brightest people I've ever met.

The point being is that criminals will exploit marijuana legalization as much as they do prohibition now.

There was no large hemp/pot industry in America as there were distilleries and breweries. Americans had a taste for alcohol dating back before the revolutionary war. In fact one of the reasons Americans fought against the British was because King George set high taxes on alcohol and other commodities as well.

There was never as large a demand for marijuana, as there was alcohol, and there still isn't. It wasn't until the 1960's that demand for pot grew enough for organized crime to get involved with it.

Marijuana demand still isn't all that scary compared with the demand for crack cocaine and methamphetamines, but they are co-produced by the same crime syndicates and that is what adds to the problems we have.

wow, people who advocate personal responsibility and freedom think you shouldn't decide for yourself to smoke a plant? It's almost as if they're some group of hypocrites or something! Gosh golly gee.

One more thing:

The ranking I cited is actually of last year. As a matter of fact Amsterdam has managed to hold on to that ranking for over six years now.

...and before you argue "post hoc ergo propter hoc", there is obviously a demand for marijuana worldwide even in Holland. Even if you cut out one route of access to a product there other ways to get. Most notoriously the Black Market.

@CrakrJak

From your second article:
According to criminologist Henk van de Bunt, each year during the past few years, five- to six thousands weed growing operations are dismantled by Dutch police.

Coffeeshops have therefore more or less been forced to deal with criminal organizations whose large scale growing- and smuggling operations guarantee a steady supply.

Sounds like Prohibition 2.0 if you ask me.

One of the facts that organized crime is still active in the drug trade it the fact that selling softdrugs is legal but growing it in large quantities isn't.
So shops must purchase their goods from people who are willing to commit a crime to sell it legally to a customer.

Next to that. The Dutch have maximized the THC (the component that makes you high) level in Cannabis to the level of it almost making it to the scale of hard drugs.
Foreigners not used to those levels of THC will use the same amount they did back home and experience different emotions then they are used to.

It's nice to live in a country that isn't that uptight about everything, but people who can't handle themselves in those situations tend to ruin it for everyone else.

The only accurate news here is the old news that conservatives have no clue what they are talking about, no matter the subject.

I think I speak with a modicum of authourity on this subject, since I lived in Amsterdam for about 7 years.

I actually watched this when it when new, much like one would rubber neck at a car wreck. Heck I even posted it here a few years back.

I'm astounded at the amount of people, many of whom are of Dutch descent, who will actually buy into this bullsh*t.

O'Reilly was talking sh*t out of his arse. No surprise there. Hey Bill, how about you go visit the country you're lambasting. You know, the one that was voted the best country to live in by the UN.

Wait, what's that, you don't even have a f*cking passport?

Haha, O'Reilly is such a moron. He doesn't even understand basic statistics, what chance is he going to have with tides!

I definately know where I'd rather live.
