@mikeyniv thats the jet exhaust. jet fuel is very much like diesel. when you see a truck rev its engine getting started it spews a nice black cloud of smoke, when a jet takes off its quite similar, it just doesnt have a much loose carbon because its more refined. therefore the brown color instead of black.

This has got to be the scariest airport I've ever flown into before. For those who don't know, the airport is an island and the runways run the length of the island.
Oh and just for sh*its and giggles, the port authority police photographer likes to keep a picture on his wall of planes that have overshot the runway and ended up in the Atlantic. Apparently, it happens from time to time. |

davisboy: That would seem to be a wise plan, However most airports are built on limited ground space. Also the runways are angled at many airports to help with crosswind situations.
The FAA has also ran computer simulations at each of the nations largest airports to help alleviate congestion and keep them safe. |

I am sort of disturbed by how much traffic goes across the runway between each take off. You would think they could design the airport better so the take off runway would always be clear. |
