Friday, May 20, 2011 2:31:15 PM As someone who is very familiar with Trier and his work, he is a very mysterious man. He has many fears, flying - germs - you name it. He has had these fears since a child. He was raised in a household where feelings were almost completely forbidden. Strange, because his parents were a kind of new age hippy type. Now, he is incredibly thought provoking. He cannot help that this is his way. Looking at his body of work, so artistic, sometimes so disengaged, no I don't think he is a threat to anyone. I also don't think that he should be kicked out of a film festival when his work is so important there. How many awards has he won at Cannes? Regardless, it seemed almost a joke and the more it made others uncomfortable, the more discomfort he felt. I don't think there was seriousness here outside of him finding himself understanding Hitler. Not such a horrible thing to look for a man behind a monster. This is more of an artistic feat and the stuff that makes |

GRadde - I was thinking more on the lines of something like saying parents are responsible for obese children, but it's not PC. You'd upset the little darlings if you forced accountability or responsability for their actions on them. That is a truth. No, it's not PC to call it bad parenting. It is PC to blame a corporation and cry for the death of Ronald McDonald. |

blounsb999 "PC is about speaking 'safely' so as not to offend anyone" PC is often tool used to silence anyone who says a truth you don't like.

Thursday, May 19, 2011 4:46:46 PM This was awful. He was trying to be funny and he failed miserably. Kristen Dunst actually looked gorgeous though despite her obvious discomfort. I still can't wait to see Melancholia. |

Thursday, May 19, 2011 4:33:01 PM @readyfisher: you can't have freedom of speech without freedom of association. He said some things they didn't like so they kicked him out of their club, something they are perfectly entitled to do. He was perfectly free to say what he did, he was also free to face the consequences. |

Thursday, May 19, 2011 4:06:28 PM PC is about speaking 'safely' so as not to offend anyone - I think we can all agree to that. Here is what Ben Franklin had to say about liberty (freedom)and safety:"Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." That being said, there IS such a thing as tact and knowing when to keep one's mouth shut. Just because I HAVE the right to an attorney doesn't mean I need to avail myself of one on a daily basis, nor to I need to bare arms everyday. |

Thursday, May 19, 2011 3:27:43 PM I gotta disagree with your view readyfisher. He was allowed to say what he wanted, and they are allowed to remove him from their group. Free speech was never a guarantee of speech without any consequences, only criminal retribution. |

Thursday, May 19, 2011 3:14:28 PM This was a joke. but he is horrible at English, and our fine Danish humor does not translate well into other langauges. it might have been a joke in bad taste, but a joke none the less. now they declared him persona non grata... Cannes, the same people who have had Roman polanski, a wanted sex offender, on their jury, decided that since Von Triers comedy skills arent good enough they dont want him around. @Fireblur: im guessing your the kid in the art gallery that thinks all the paintings look like crap if you cant see what they are right away. granted he makes weird films, but he sure as hell never let anyone tell him what he can and cannot do. and he has won in cannes before, and recieved the jurys special honor. so he probably aint all that bad..unless of course you know more about it than they do. |
