Thursday, April 14, 2011 3:28:36 PM As a former jeweller, I hate moissanite. If you ever had to tell a lady her $5,000 ring that she brought in for a repair or polish isn't really a diamond or worth $5,000, you would too. I imagine the same could apply to pawnbrokers, but I think they probably get their jollies dashing people's hopes. That said, if you know what's on your finger and you're cool with that then good for you. |

Thursday, April 14, 2011 3:20:41 PM @Handsompod It's difficult to determine the exact depth of the pavillion without better lighting. Assuming the diamond is sitting high in the mount, one possible explanation is the diameter of the diamond. If the diamond is proportionally wide, it will use a prong mounting designed for a higher carat weight. Sometimes people choose these diamonds because they appear larger in 99% of circumstances; it's a way to get more bang for your buck (in some people's opinion.) Anyway, if the next mount down in depth won't hold the diamond, there ya go. Bending prongs either way is bad. If she really loves the guy, she'll accept the ring regardless of the stone and mounting. |

Thursday, April 14, 2011 3:19:45 PM I don't know... while on the one hand, I do agree that diamonds are ridiculous in price and advertising... they are so beautiful. And if you just got a plain ring in white gold (since yellow gold is gross) everyone would assume it's something other than a wedding band. I will definitely try to find a good alternative, though. |

Thursday, April 14, 2011 3:13:45 PM Anyone heard of moissanite? It's cost about 1/10 of a diamond and it doesn't yellow like CZ does. It's also more radiant (the way the light hits it) and because they're lab created they're flawless. I say f*ck diamonds. |

Thursday, April 14, 2011 2:53:14 PM DrP, yes but the ladies like them because they're shiney. What the lady wants the lady gets. Personally I think they're better used in my grinder. |

Thursday, April 14, 2011 2:51:08 PM Angillion, I'll remeber that the next time the wife is after a new ring. I'll get her a peice of gypsum and tell her you said it was ok. :) I'll be sure to post pictures of the bruises. |

Thursday, April 14, 2011 2:33:54 PM I'd be unhappy that they wasted hundreds on a very small piece of rock obtained by extremely unethical methods and sold at vastly inflated prices by a cartel. It has nothing to do with eternal anything. Many rocks would be just as appropriate - they'd certainly last a lot longer than any human lifespan. |

Thursday, April 14, 2011 2:29:31 PM Look. Diamonds are bullpoo anyways. De Beers specifically aimed their marketing towards making diamonds a "necessity" in wedding rings, and through so many years, they've succeeded beyond what they could have imagined. The diamond doesn't make it eternal, the diamond doesn't do poo. The circular shape of the ring, going around and around forever, is symbolic of the eternal nature of love. Throw the diamond right out of the equation. Here's a quote from the De Beers advertising agency in 1947: "We are dealing with a problem in mass psychology. We seek to ... strengthen the tradition of the diamond engagement ring -- to make it a psychological necessity capable of competing successfully at the retail level with utility goods and services ..." See? Just a load of crap. |

Thursday, April 14, 2011 2:16:45 PM "Standard practice here in N.A. lately, makes 'em look bigger." Exactly my point, it's a diamond, it's about it being eternal not how big it is. Stop it, I don't want people bragging at me with bling.

Thursday, April 14, 2011 2:12:56 PM It has nothing to do with price guys, I don't think the stone is mounted sympathetically, attempting to make a £200 stone look like a £2000 one by sticking it in a hideously oversized mount looks tacky. That's all I meant, taste over price any day. You can't buy taste and there is no accounting for it. It looks cheap whether it cost £1 or £10,000,000 I couldn't give a toss. |

Thursday, April 14, 2011 2:11:48 PM At first I was pissed because someone tore into one of my favorite books, but then I was like "Oh my, that's so sweet." I would not be angry, as long as it's not MY copy of the book. |

Thursday, April 14, 2011 1:59:14 PM @Handsompod.... it would seem you are talking about the cost of the stone, rather than the value of it. And they say romance is dead... |

Thursday, April 14, 2011 1:49:07 PM @Handsompod Maybe this guy doesn't have tons of money. The whole idea of buying her love with diamonds is pretty lame in my mind. That just proves she likes your wallet. Not you |

Thursday, April 14, 2011 1:42:24 PM Awful big square you cut out there. I'm sure she could feel the weight difference since half the book is missing. Oh and you know, the ring would be knocking around a lot. Good idea, poor execution. |
