She also was the one who forced Washington to recognize AIDS and to fund treatment research when no one would. Pres. Reagan never even said the word AIDS or acknowledged that it existed. She testified before Congress, rallied support and generated many millions of dollars in fundraisers.
But her 7 husbands and 8 marriages kinda overshadow that I guess...

But it's not a level playing field. In terms of 'importance', she might not be more important, but she is more famous. She is an internationally recognised face, and for good reason. She is one of the greats of the film industry. Of which the news has a deep-seated connection. She might be no more IMPORTANT than say, the 93 year old grandfather that died today next door to me today, but she achieved so much and captivated so many that it IS important to tell people of her death.
This whole "Hey what about recognition for ______? He/she died today and the news isn't reporting that" view annoys me. She was, and always will be, a national institution. the fact that she has died is NEWS. |

I disagree with the idea that her death should not be reported. The news does ( or should) prioritise important news, but it also reports on items of interest to people. You personally may not be interested in the death of an actress, and that is fine. I have no interest at all in sports- so by your definition that knocks them out. The list could go on all day like that- and by the time we have all agreed on things that we all care about we may have a cute kitten as the only news item.

While Liz Taylor is a legend in the film industry, I do not feel like it is the news' place to cover this story. She is part of pop culture history and will be remembered for centuries for it. But she was a person who made her living by making films. She is no more important than the man who fell off a building today, or the girl who was killed in the woods. If you do not report on every single death, don't report single deaths of anyone. |
