Thursday, March 17, 2011 4:38:58 PM The dogs were taken to the vet afterwards, it's on several youtube descriptions of the video. They didn't rescued them inmediatly cause the dog protecting his friend was aggresive, so they had to wait for the "Japan Earthquake Animal Rescue and Support" team to pick them up. They were both taken to the vet and are ok, waiting for the owners :D |

Thursday, March 17, 2011 6:06:11 AM @gerry - and a human companion? How long did the Andes flight 571 survivors wait before they chowed down? |

Wednesday, March 16, 2011 10:08:45 PM @topgun966 Haha, yeah, go do a Google search for "Sumo corruption" All humans have good and evil. All human organizations have good and evil. All human societies have good and evil. If you think that a video of a traumatized animal supports your belief that Japanese culture is better than American, you need some serious reeducation. |

Wednesday, March 16, 2011 8:13:56 PM Americans dont seem to understand, Japan culture is much different than americans. They will NOT throw anyone or anything under the bus. They have a culture of honor. |

Wednesday, March 16, 2011 7:00:29 PM I don't get how you could leave your dog behind to die, when he would obviously stick with you until the end. Unless the owner is already dead. |

Wednesday, March 16, 2011 6:53:46 PM @coedog: Are you kidding me? People are far less loyal than a dog. People will throw you under the bus the first chance they get if it benefits them. |

Wednesday, March 16, 2011 6:25:03 PM Not to diminish this, but dog's are not more loyal than people. Would I leave my friend behind to die in the mud? Would you? I wouldn't even leave a complete stranger if I was able bodied to help him. |

Did you know when you die, cats will start eating your carcaus after 2 days. Dogs wait 4-5 days. Way more loyal! Just a fun fact I thought you'd find interesting...or disturbing. |

Wednesday, March 16, 2011 3:28:22 PM According to Yahoo news: CNN and the UK Telegraph have both reported that the dogs have been rescued since the footage aired, and are both receiving veterinary care; the more seriously wounded dog is at a clinic in the city of Mito, while the protective spaniel-type dog is receiving care at a shelter in the same town. |

Wednesday, March 16, 2011 2:34:19 PM @madest, osiri First, you're disagreeing over semantics. I also own multiple dogs. They are social animals and regard their family (human or not) as their "pack", even though they're in a domestic environment and don't hunt for food. For example, mine are protective of each other and their human family. Their kibble diet doesn't change that. Second, there are arguments for and against domesticated dogs' status as pack animals. It's often argued that domestication has killed off a lot of the traits that make wolves pack animals. On the other hand, cases exist that indicate that over time, wild domesticated dog populations can form packs and hunt. Individual dogs scavenging solo doesn't mean much. You could just as easily argue that those scavenging near their homes post-Katrina were staying there because of their pack mentality. My interpretation is that some dogs can form packs by your definition if the need arises and given enough time. |

Wednesday, March 16, 2011 12:29:13 PM @osiri, Dictionary defines a "pack" animal as an animal that lives and hunts in packs. That's not the life domesticated dogs lead. In fact in the wake of hurricane Katrina they found most dogs kept to themselves, close to home scavenging for food. Wild dogs do hunt in packs. Domesticated and feral dogs do not. |
