yes, she speaks like a valley girl, which did make me want to punch her through the screen. But I just re-watched it, and never did she claim to be speaking on behalf of UCLA. She was stating her opinion, on specific people around her and the irritating behaviors they possess.
Also, if you think she is "below average" you have a very high opinion of "average"
She's just a stupid college kid. Big whoop. it didn't have to turn into some big scandal or anything. |

@Serpentchick: She went wrong by assuming to speak for all of UCLA. Plus, the dumb, blonde, valley-girl BS way of talking makes her sound like a drating fool. Her inflection, tone and sophomoric qualities show signs that she is not a good candidate for higher education or responsible free-thinking. She is a below average little brat of a girl who needs to learn temperance and gain some wisdom. How she made it into UCLA or any college for that matter is a testament to a screening process failure. |

I don't get what was so wrong with what she said. She could have put it better, but it's not racism to be mad at the SPECIFIC asians that are performing irritating things, like talking on the phone in the library. And it could be an actual correlation that the student who do talk in the library, and the students who's family come and do their chores, are asians, because of cultural differences.
Is it racist for me to dislike the particular african americans who like to yell the N word on the bus? I don't hate all black people, and it's fairly obvious (at least on my bus) that it is ONLY black people doing it, does that make me racist? I don't think so. |

What if SOME ethnicities are better at adhering to the cultural norms of their surrounding (i.e. adopted) environs of appropriateness than others? And what if most among the ranks of transgressors happen to display Epicanthic folds? Who's to mitigate their injustice in the name of the very thing which makes them eligible for diversity-related benefits otherwise?
The same entity who'd be equally apt to deny them on the basis of said ethnocentric diversion? I think not.. |

She isnt allowed to have a stupid opinion?
The university staff and institution are in some way connected and even liable for her statements?

it was BOTH. she was being racist and ethnocentric. Where do you get the idea that they are mutually exclusive terms? in order to be racist there has to be a strong component of thinking, "My way is better and the only way", which results in ethnocentric views which lead to racist behavior and thought.

Riiiiight... because obviously the Institution is somehow responsible for the opinion of everyone there. The sad thing is that they actually felt the need to create this video to refute some other trash. Ball's in your court now Fancylad, we want to see a similar video of you, explaining how diverse and tolerant IAB is and how the opinions reflected in a certain forum don't apply to the community as a whole. It would be amusing. |

This saved me about 5 minutes of trying to find the most succinct and poignant way of 1) again disassembling the accusation, and 2) turning it against those who're so knee-jerk in their inculcated defense of diversity that they endup trampling all over its very fundamentals in the process. Again. It wasn't racist. It was ethnocentric. Huge drating difference. She wasn't taking about Asian-Americans, just foreign exchange students who's cultural practices offended her. Doesn't mean that what she said wasn't ignorant, but it wasn't racist. Racist these days has become a generic smear term to attack anything anybody finds offensive regardless if it has anything to do with race at all. The histrionic and self-righteous comments of RACIST!!! on this site yesterday are an example. What was really amusing was how people immediately resorted to prejudice and stereotyping to show how much of a racist and idiot she was. But she'll probably get expelled. |

I think it was overstated... he came in swinging, as though it was a tragic death, or something.
I would have just said "Look. This was the girl's opinion, it's NOT the opinion of the campus and we don't treat people that way here. It was just a stupid incident and shouldn't be held against the community." |
