Yes it probably was humiliating. However was that not to be the point of the lesson. Slavery was not just wrong but it was humiliating to be such. This is to understand the effect. The teacher should have also made other ethnic groups pose as slaves so they can understand what it's like. |

The class was seperated. He wasn't made a 'mock slave' because he was black. He was made a mock slave because he was in whatever half of the class. Then his mom goes ahead and says it's all racist. All my money goes to say that kid only said he didn't like it after he saw how his mother OVER-reacted to it. God damn you drating pussies. Grow up. You felt degraded? Good, now you have a minor drating idea of how the slaves felt. There was nothing racist here ..only ignorance |

The kid was not ostracized in any way. He was part of the 50/50 split. I am sure there were black kids on the masters side too- is it racist for them to bid on white kids? His mom is a fool. He probably didn't think it was an issue until he talked about his day with his mom and she's like "you should feel upset about this!"
I think she needs to be educated about what racist means... |

This kid is a pussy!!! My high school teacher made our class pick cotton. My fingers hurt after 15 minutes. I was like, F$@k being a slave, abolish this poo. Then my teacher was all like we already have then I was all like thats good!!! |

The woman was wrong--it was not racist. If they groups had been chosen because of their race, there would be a defensible argument for something akin to racism, but this? Not at all. She doesn't get to wave around the "racist" gun every time race relations are discussed, taught or analyzed. Sit down, honey, your ignorance is showing. |

We had a mock slave auction in high school as a fundraiser for sports teams. It was 100% voluntary, and the "slave"s simply had to follow the master around for a day carrying his books and taking his notes and such. |

Jeeze, I wish people would quit making themselves a minority. My Mom is a history teacher and she has to teach the same subject. She doesn't do a slave auction, but she does something similar. She asks everyone to make sure they're comfortable with it and they don't have to participate if they don't want to. I think the teacher probably should have been a little more sensitive, perhaps. Anyone should have been able to see the potential outcome of doing something so touchy. |

I guess the real message here is that its better to be politically correct rather than to gain any insight into a horrible period in our history. What harm could that possibly cause? Unless you are one of those people who worry about history repeating itself.
Don't get me wrong though. I'm sure that this lesson could have been presented in a better way, but I'm going to give this teacher some slack for being human with good intentions. |

Should have had three things, 1) let the students choose whether they wanted to be slaves or masters, of course no one would choose slave, 2) not have the touching part, and 3) make it a two day thing where they switch roles.
The kid didn't look too sincere though. My guess is that he told his mother and she blew it out of proportion and told the kid to play along. |
