Tuesday, March 08, 2011 8:46:07 PM It seems like every few years, the ideas originally proposed by FDR in his "Second Bill of Rights" speech is trotted out. As usual, the Republicans attack and foam at the mouth over them and yet... What is actually wrong with them? Where would America be if back in 1944, Congress embraced the Second Bill of Rights and passed them through. Where would we be today? |

Tuesday, March 08, 2011 1:24:07 PM Only problem is, if everybody is able to access schooling to become doctors or astronauts or politicians, you won't have anybody to build the schools and do the most basic menial labor required to keep a country running |

Tuesday, March 08, 2011 8:25:10 AM Gerry1of1 with a gun... did the hair on the back of anyone else's neck just stand up or just mine? :) Seriously though, Gerry nailed it. The 2nd amendment was put in place so that the government would fear the people. We are gun crazy because of our past. Not our constitution. |

Tuesday, March 08, 2011 8:04:12 AM "Would anyone actually like to attack my claim that America is gun nutty because it's in the constitution, despite no active involvement from the government?" I do believe it's being a part of the constitution has something to do with how much Americans love guns. However, I would argue that it has a hell of a lot more to do with our history and culture of hunting and warfare. Most initial colonists here in the new world did not know anything about agriculture or farming and had to rely on hunting, or the hospitality of the natives, in order to survive. The French who inhabited the Louisiana territory relied primarily on trading animal skins for survival. Those who came west to claim land had to rely on hunting to make ends meet and feed their families. For a solid 300 years guns were considered necessary for both sustenance and protection. The second amendment facilitated that culture, but it did not cause it.

Tuesday, March 08, 2011 8:02:30 AM Baal "Would anyone actually like to attack my claim that America is gun nutty because it's in the constitution, despite no active involvement from the government?" We're gun crazy because it's in our culture. The Wild West... and rural towns where hunting is common. Dirty Harry and John Wayne alwyas had guns. The constitution just gives guarantees the right to own them. "Theoretically". There's much debate about the actual meaning of the Second Ammendment as it may have been intended to allow for civilian malitia, not personal ownership. But the Supreme Court went back to a traditional stance in District of Colombia vs Heller in 2008 saying the 2nd Ammendment gives individuals the right own guns not related to militia. But personally, I think the only real guarantee against a tyranical goverment is a well armed popoulation.

Tuesday, March 08, 2011 7:59:22 AM The constitution is not to be used in such a manner Which is why I said earlier that it would be such farce to even try implementing it. |

Tuesday, March 08, 2011 7:54:58 AM Cajun: The constitution is not to be used in such a manner, It was written to protect our citizens from the government, not to say what the government must do for it's citizens. There is nothing in our constitution or laws preventing citizens from owning property, In fact the 5th amendment already protects that right. |

Tuesday, March 08, 2011 7:35:53 AM The operative word there is 'Bear' Baal wasn't advocating people be entitled to a house, rather a reminder in the constitution that says you have a right to own one (and no it doesn't say you're entitled to it). Though I suppose that in of itself would have problems. |

Tuesday, March 08, 2011 6:51:14 AM Baalthazaq: You are confusing the "right to bear arms". The operative word there is 'Bear', meaning to own, not to be bought for them. We have a right to 'Pursue' happiness, not have it handed to us by the government. Also, What happens when one day your government can't pay for those entitlements anymore ? You get the riots that are happening in Greece, The strikes happening in Spain, Massive protests in Italy and Ireland. A state sets itself up for failure when it enshrines 'cradle to grave' entitlements in it's constitution. |

Tuesday, March 08, 2011 5:31:48 AM the right?? No no no. In Ireland and Britian this mentality has people on social welfare and living in houses out of tax payers money. If you have a child the state will give you a house so teenage girls are getting pregnet all over the shop to get out of their homes. Education yes. In ireland we have a free college system (€2000 a year for a registaration fee but, it is afforable) and a free health care system. Health and Education improve society and I think they are important. I also belive they should be right as, for houses and material bullpoo take some responsiblity and get a job. I wish there was a cut off as I think most of the people in Ireland on it are either a)lazy b)drug addicts in a cycle. Good points bad points. And as a teacher, kids do not need laptops or ipods to learn. |

Tuesday, March 08, 2011 1:34:50 AM @Baal I'm not talking about your argument in your first post. I asked a simple question. Why are you obsessed over gun ownership in the USA? |

Tuesday, March 08, 2011 12:37:54 AM The point of the second amendment back then was to reassure people that their weapons weren't going to be taken away. |

Monday, March 07, 2011 11:55:18 PM One of the reasons for the second amendment is, get this, to deter an undemocratic government. Just take a look at before the beginning of the United Government, it took an insurrection (which should have failed by many reasons) to drive out the British. Interestingly enough it was rather useful in this little conflict. |
