Friday, March 04, 2011 9:00:54 PM I'm still surprised that I'm the only one who's pointed out the fact that THE SCHOLARSHIP IS ONLY $500! That'll hardly pay for books, let alone a higher eductation! |

Friday, March 04, 2011 1:24:11 AM Now when do we get a white only university. Hey, I'm no racist, but not being racist means letting the majority have the same stuff the minority has too doesn't it? |

Wednesday, March 02, 2011 9:24:46 PM I've been wishing I was black for the scholarship opportunities. It's pretty ridiculous the way a black students who performs worse academically than a white student is rewarded just for the color of their skin. Anyone who disagrees with my statement is simply ignorant of the facts. |

Wednesday, March 02, 2011 11:43:20 AM "But somehow it's racist for the one group who can't compete for any special scholarships to have one?" It seems to me that nobody is actually saying this is racist. People are getting all defensive and insulting black people just assuming that all black people oppose this scholarship. Well I'm half black and I think its fine. Its not racist. The article only said that they expect to get harsh opposition, it didn't say that they actually have. |

Wednesday, March 02, 2011 11:34:48 AM "Go ahead and guess, I-A-B... Farmers? Black women? Exchange students? Muslims? Hermaphrodites? Oh no, not even close..." Why would you suggest those groups? With the exception of hermaphrodites, all of them are able to get scholarships specifically for their group. Even if it is based on need or abilities, black scholarships or women's scholarships are cutting out much of the competition. But somehow it's racist for the one group who can't compete for any special scholarships to have one? |

Wednesday, March 02, 2011 10:04:27 AM Iv been saying this for years. its becoming okay to give the white man the sh*t end of the stick. Especially were i live on Vancouver island, BC, Canada. The Native's don't even have to pay taxes, even tho they drive on the same public roads and attend the same public schools. Its not reverse racism, Its just plain racist! |

There are very few options for white males, I'll list them: -Have rich parents to pay your tuition -Be middle class or lower and just get approved for loans and pay them for the next 15 years -Be amazing at a sport to get a scholoarship that way You missed Military Service!

Wednesday, March 02, 2011 8:45:38 AM As far as scholarships go (which are supposed to help people AFFORD college), they should all definitely be based on financial hardship. I think everyone can agree to that. So there should be equal opportunities for white people to afford college as any other people. In that sense this is fine because it is intended to make up for the imbalance already existing. I think the trickier discussion is about college admissions, if minorities should be given preference or affirmative action. This is where blacks (any other minorities too) have a decent argument. Nothing to do with slavery, but with segregation. Back in the day black people were not allowed to get a good education. Because of this, even after segregation ended black parents couldn't help their kids do well in school so they would not get a good education, and the chain continued. One can argue that it is harder for a black child to do well in school, and that is why they should have special treatment in admi |

Wednesday, March 02, 2011 5:12:51 AM good for them. i have a friend of mine who goes to DU for criminal justice, and the only reason he was able to afford that college without having to go into the military first was he qualified for a minority scholarship that was granted to native Americans. he qualified for the scholarship because his grandfather was half cherokee. and yes there are cherokee bloodlines out in the mid-west, trails of tears caused that. regardless, he had to back stuff up and fabricated interest and involvement, but ended up getting the scholarship. discrimination against any color for any reason is still discrimination. so how come that is ok for minorities to do, even though whites are only the majority by a very small amount. |

Wednesday, March 02, 2011 2:12:49 AM I gotta go with the mainstream here, it's pretty nice. When I was on exchange in the US years back, I was looking at scholarships with a couple really gifted friends- we quickly realized that, just by being a foreign exchange student, but also white male, I had almost double the amount of possible scholarships they did. And that, in turn, was less than half of what my host-sister could apply for. Talk about discrimination :/ |

Wednesday, March 02, 2011 12:52:23 AM Fantastic idea. Just because you are white does not mean that you have parents that can afford to send you to college. There are tons of white men that come from poverty, and it is unfair to assume just because your white, then you can afford to go to school. But really, I think that they should get rid of this whole let’s give scholarships based on race/religion/ gender etc thing altogether, scholarships should go to whoever is the best candidate, not to someone just because they are black, Jewish, gay or whatever. |

Tuesday, March 01, 2011 11:55:03 PM There is only one rational decision that can be based on skin color: what level of SPF do I need in a sunscreen? Anything else is bullpoo. If nothing else, I hope this scholarship wakes up the sleepers to the realization that racism isn't restricted to any color. All preferential treatment based on skin color needs to be retired. |
