the problem with tnt is that it's not economical to make. You have to kill at least five creepers to get enough gunpowder, which takes at least 3 arrows each (on easy), which you have to get by either killing skeletons or crafting from flint (1/10 chance from a gravel block), sticks, and feathers (0-2 from killing a chicken) all so you can mine about 16 blocks at once. For that time investment, it'd be quicker to just use a pickax to mine that same area.
F*ck, I need to get out more...
