I've seen sleeping horses. You might have done without realising it. Horses usually sleep standing up. Seems weird to us, but apparently it's more comfortable for a horse than lying down. They can lock their legs upright so they won't bend at the knee when they relax in sleep and of course they don't have to worry about falling over with a leg in each corner. It makes sense when you think of horses in the wild - prey animals on open plains whose main defence is being good at running. A horse lying down is going to be a lot slower to get away from an incoming predator than a horse standing up, so sleeping standing up was a beneficial adaptation.
They can sleep lying down though, and foals often do. Maybe they don't have the same "must be ready to run" instinct as adult horses, because in the wild foals would be protected by the adult horses. |
