Tuesday, February 15, 2011 10:49:16 AM This was a really good documentary but I think that all the other people featured in it were way more interesting. |

Sunday, February 13, 2011 11:05:28 AM He did frost bite his toes. He's not a superman, he just has an unusually high tolerance for pain. Badass for sure, but he's still human flesh. |

Sunday, February 13, 2011 7:34:50 AM I've read a few books by people doing polar and near-polar expeditions and it's not unusual for them to wonder how they'll get all the food in...until they start. 6000+ calories sounds an unreasonable amount back at home in the warm, but after a day's work that far north you'll shovel thousands of calories down your neck and lick the bowl clean afterwards because you seriously need it. I heartily recommend Sir Ranulph Fiennes' books. He has such style and humour when describing how hard this stuff is. His full name and title is Sir Ranulph Twistleton-Wykeham-Fiennes, OBE, Baronet of Banbury...and it suits him. "At night, when you go to sleep, all the scabs stick together. You've got to force [your mouth] open with your tongue [and] all your blood goes in the communal bowl of porridge, which causes bad relations. He did surgery on his own hands. With a power saw in his shed. Without anaesthetic. |

Sunday, February 13, 2011 7:20:41 AM Bloody hell- how many calories does he need for something like this? must be huge- how does he get them all in! Ranulph Fiennes describes a diet of 8000 calories a day in one of his books, which is just enough to keep you going on an unsupported polar expedition. That's as hardcore as it gets, seeing as you need to drag everything you will need for the whole way there and back on a sledge, unaided. You can be sure he carried just enough food and no more, as every kilo counts when you have to drag it hundreds of miles. 8000 wasn't quite enough - he lost weight steadily on it, but he knew he would and planned for it. People on supported near-polar expeditions involving a lot of physical work tend to need ~6000 calories a day. Given this guy is running and almost nude, I think he'd be using maybe 400 calories per hour. He's not doing as much work as Fiennes was, but he must be using a bundle to generate heat. |

Sunday, February 13, 2011 6:04:42 AM Well, I suppose IAB isn't a "News" site, although I can't help but wonder why this wasn't seen before. Neat for those that haven't seen it, though. |

Sunday, February 13, 2011 1:24:28 AM Komarov: I'm guessing that you were born during the winter months, As I was. It's not scientific, but I've noticed that most people born in the summer prefer warmer temps and vice versa. Other than Hof, I've only heard of a few Buddhist monks living in the Himalayas that could do anything even similar. |
