Why would it even want to eat a pigeon whole? Seems like there would be more sharp points than in a fish, and fish bones are softer.

Many birds can use cranial kinesis, they stretch their skulls to swallow outsized food. Also when you look at a bird like a pigeon most of the 'bulk' is feathers, a plucked pigeon, or indeed one with its feathers slicked down isn't that big.

Nature can be harsh
