I suppose you can put it that way. Religion is a hammer that can hammer nails in, but it damages a lot of wood surrounding the nail and it also hurts the hand holding the nail. In other words, it's a tool that brings more trouble than good.

You've got to look back, how did religion start? It started in a much simpler time when people didn't understand how many things worked. Religion simply offered them a reason how and why. It's like cargo cults or volcano-worshiping tribes. When there's no answer people like to go to religion.

Fortunately we live in an age where many questions are answered. Religion has outlived it's usefulness. We do not need it's moral teachings, (some are questionable like the old testament supporting slavery) and we definitely don't need it's "answers".

I'm no iconoclast, but if the world really wants to keep growing we need to abandon religion. It's an old-age tradition that brings more problems that it can solve.

Religion is a mere victim by those who take advantage of it (i.e. Osama bin Laden, various popes, David Koresh). If we really want to change minds then we shouldn't insist on changing them over night. That only demonizes them and make them view poorly of us.

I'm dismissing an ideology that I find it harmful and brings little to no good. In my argument, just forget about what the religion teaches, who practices it, etc. My argument is not related to those.

Yes, religion does more harm than good. If you look at the middle east, Christian Africa, Ireland, parts of the US religion brings much sadness. What kindness can religion bring that a lack of religion cannot?

So it comes to my conclusion that while not all theist are as cruel as the father in this article, I feel that if religion itself is scrapped a lot of people could be saved.

Another reason why people need to stop believing this stuff.

It's a shame some people do terrible things motivated by religious reasons or how some people manage to convince others to do evil through religion.

We've got to weigh the pros and cons. Religion doesn't offer that many pros and it has way too many cons. So do we really need religion?

It's like saying believing in alchemy is okay. It may not hurt people initially, but it can lead to people getting hurt. That's the word: it CAN lead to pain and suffering.

Honestly, weigh the pros and cons again. I think that if people stopped believing in a religion a chunk of violence and bigotry in the world would disappear. Not all of it, because religion does not create stupidity; stupidity flocks to religion.

When I was working in Iraq, this happened to one of my interpreters, dad killed her for talking to Americans [the fact she was making more than him might have had something to do with it as well]

I really don't believe that cases like this are limited to Islam.. and I really don't believe that 'shaming Islam' is the real motive....It's basically a father being a complete control freak and not wanting to be seen as the father who can't control his children...who they dare to disobey.

how the drat any father can do this sort of thing is way beyond my understanding or reasoning abilities. When you're a dad, especially a dad to a little girl, you just want them to be happy and feel loved.

Some people...of all faiths, social status, and abilities are just animals...like someone else said before, we're only going to scratch the surface of the real problem whilst there is an ignorance about how this can happen in all walks of life, and not just focus on the times it happens within muslim families.
