Thursday, January 20, 2011 3:26:09 PM I love watching stuff like this. Im from Vancouver, and every year some one has to insist that "people out east are better at driving in the snow" and i get asked "why does 18" of snow slow down your whole traffic network?". Well we get maybe a foot of snow a year, and for a week it takes 20min longer to get to work. The rest of the winter its usually scattered showers and 5'C, or its -2 and sunny. Looks like that extra 5 months of practice a year doesnt help anyways. |

Thursday, January 20, 2011 11:26:11 AM as a pgh. native - here's the scoop... Tues was an ice warning. PAT was to salt the hill but the salt truck driver decided he needed chains before attempting the hill. The road was noted as salted even though the salt truck guy never returned to do it after putting the chains on. PAT is going to use GPS to keep track of the roads that were/weren't done.

Thursday, January 20, 2011 11:06:25 AM It would've helped if they didn't completly lock the wheels if you allow them to turn slowly you can keep more control pretty much the concept behind ABS. |

Thursday, January 20, 2011 9:40:57 AM ugh, this reminds me of how I slipped on the only little patch of black ice on my driveway this morning. Asphalt is painful. |

Thursday, January 20, 2011 9:13:56 AM I was joking. These people obviously do drive on these roads every year. I guess sarcasm doesn't come across via text unless you specifically write something on the lines of [/sarcasm at the end. Chill out people.

Thursday, January 20, 2011 6:14:14 AM @CoyoteKing NOT climate change NOT global warming NOT global cooling This is an example of the god dammed weather Seriously, day to day is weather, for something to be climate, it has to be an average over at least 30 years. |

Wednesday, January 19, 2011 11:33:00 PM It looked like the guy in the car at :09 had a freaking death wish, what with the way he swerved so hard and fast. I KNOW he was trying to get out of the way, but still... |

Wednesday, January 19, 2011 9:30:23 PM I can only forgive their actions because of "global climate change". These poor people have NEVER driven on an icy road and thus know NOTHING about navigatitng them. It is in NO WAY their fault............... |

Wednesday, January 19, 2011 8:06:44 PM EdiMesic~ "The city is obligated to do something about these severe conditions and contribute to safety on the road." No, the City is obligated to *TRY* to do something. It's unrealistic and foolhardy to ever expect that they'll be able to address every problem, simultaneously, throughout a city, especially one as large as Pittsburgh. Snow falls all at once, everywhere, the streets crews can only be a few places at a time and I can assure you they are focusing on areas near Hospitals, Police Stations, and Fire Departments, not a residential side street. Do not make the mistake of trusting that any government agency, Federal, State, or Local, is going to take care of everything for you. Your well being has to be your own priority first. |

Wednesday, January 19, 2011 6:23:09 PM Looks like black ice. Also known as "scary poo". The drivers cannot be blamed (fully) for this. It's very hard to tell if the road is icy, and they were probably not going very fast in the first place. What you saw was gravity. There should have been police cars to set up a road block before all those crashes. |

Wednesday, January 19, 2011 6:22:26 PM Also @ Steelgrid: You're an idiot. Have you ever driven before? The hill is extremely steep. It doesn't matter if you drive fast or slow, you're bound to lose control over your viechle. The city is obligated to do something about these severe conditions and contribute to safety on the road. Sure, it's also a part of common sense. You should never drive fast with this cold take risks for granted, but in some cases (like in the video) it doesn't matter if you go slow or fast. |
