@Volsunga Read the posts, the CBSC is not a government agency, but a council made up of private broadcasters in Canada. They are the ones that asked that member stations edit the song. So it could air, as is on the public broadcaster, CBC. |

Man, this is like my favorite oldies song. Not because of the faggot reference -though I still sI am a racist! a tad when I hear them say it- but because I think the opening guitar solo is one of the best ever. Right up there with Crazy Train. |

The band Dire Straits is anything but bigoted. The whole song was sarcasm aimed at people that think making it big as a band is easy.
Unfortunately most people didn't get the gist of the song. The repetitive line "I want my MTV" is why it became so popular. |

anyone noticed that at the point when they are singing about "the little faggot" and there is that music video on the tv the song title of that songs sais "baby baby" thats not discrimination it is a prediction and predictions are -when they come true- the truth and thus not discrimination biatch BTW according to southpark a faggot is someone who drives a harley davidson and makes a lot of noise all the time |

An American company publishing a censored version of Huck Finn is different from the Canadian GOVERNMENT banning a song because it's "offensive" on pretty shaky terms. Governments can set precedent.

i find it funny how they're up in arms about the word faggot but you can hear nigga x1000 in some crappy pop 'rap' song no problem.
This really pissed me off, not a huge Mark knopfler fan but the guitar riff from that song is just awesome. In addition, they get their knickers in a twist but a toronto radio station offers the westboro baptists a live, on-air interview to stop them picketing at the Tucson, AZ victims funerals.
Sure, we'll let those whackos on the air... But the word faggot (which is used in a legit context in this song) is completely unacceptable.

The song was making fun of people displaying attitudes like that of the "custom kitchen" installer in the song.
If anything, custom kitchen installers should be up in arms for the unfavourable way they were portrayed in the song.  |
