MattPrince:

There were Africans living just fine in Britain at least 2000 years ago, which is long before double glazing. No doubt they complained about the winters, but everyone here does that.

My argument is essentially that the slight tendencies towards differences between some groups aren't enough to warrant seperate classification, especially as they are smaller than the variation between individuals within each group.

Even if they were, classifying people by laughably inaccurate descriptions of skin colour would still be irrational babbling.

Angillion..

1) Any difference is significant as a survival trait. A 1mm change in length of a finches bill is significant. So I argue a small difference would be significant to our history, but not to our present (not since double glazing anyhow)

2) No agreed, I'd be surprised if someone with long ancestry from Greece was as comfortable with low temperatures as someone with long term ancestry from the Northern Cape of South Africa.

iii) and iv) Both No. However, I do suspect some political correctness has crept in here. In birds a subspecies can not be defined by a single characteristic. Usually its defined by a suite of characteristics many of which will overlap to some extent at the boundaries of population.

The "official" take on it is - one subspecies, one 'race'.

iv) That cold response is such a defining feature of a person that people should be classified by their cold response and it should be considered to describe who they are.
You are taking just 1 characteristic and trying to get us thinking that that's what it takes to define a group, or race, you haven't taken ANYTHING else and that's what we have to do... Study the generality and not just particular characteristics. Let alone the background to those characteristics

Unless you believe all 4, then you don't believe cold response is a race.

Says who? You? I don't have to believe all 4 of those arbitrary statements you just gave as if they were irrefutable, god-given or even consistent.

ii) That this is true for ALL Africans and ALL Europeans.
I just explained that on the other post.

iii) That the difference is greater than differences in cold response between different Africans and different Britons
Again, I explained it... There are less differences between African people to cold weather, or Briton people to that same conditions, that between each other group. You could find variances, but that's just the way evolution and adaptations works, read a little and try to understand it.

You can have an African and a Briton with similar weather responses, depending on how and where their ancestors lived, but you will find more similarities among their own "races" than between each other. Taking into account what I mentioned about generations before these two were even born and had their genes passed on

I'll answer this too:
Can you prove all of the following? Do you even believe them all? If you don't, then you've negated your own point.
That's not necessarily true just because you say so and can't think something better to disprove a point

i) There is a significant difference in average cold response between an African and a Briton?
Yes, between a white Briton that has generations living in a cold weather and an African that has generations behind him living in warm weather, there is a significant difference. What you can't even try to understand is that if the African is the 5th generation living in a cold weather, there will be small changes that would make him a little more resistant to cold weather. Without even talking about how the skin color has pros and cons confronting that same situation of cold and warm weathers, and also muscle/fat proportions

Thank you for making it so obvious that you're talking rubbish. It saves me having to waste my time reading your posts.

Shame if you had any points.

Actually, that sentence you are referring to isn't wrong, but most importantly it has nothing
to do with my point, that I'm sure you read, you just didn't like the fact that I said that

If you can't answer to the points I made then say so, don't just blame it on something that you
took personal, and was meant to be that way anyway, but that doesn't disprove my point

Shame you can't argue with anybody, you just want to come here and dictate what ever the hell
you want to say and don't even considerate that other people might be right and you could learn
something, if you think of yourself as an intelligent person (Which by your arrogance I think you do)
then you would take what people say into account and, if that was the case, accept that you could
be wrong and think di

@Angillion - I'd be surprised if there isn't quite marked differences in cold response between you and a native African. More than that between you and I. Does that make me a racist?

Can't really say I'm surprised, finding a post on IAB that doesn't have a single comment from you is really hard

@iceblack - you could do with knowing the difference between race and species, races of a species can freely interbreed, species cannot (using the simplest species definition).

As for learned behaviour, such as driving - don't think race has anything to do with it.

@Angilion In other words, you drink the koolaid as well.

----------
You're implying that he's pretending not to be racist like you?
We all fall into a trap when we use racist or homophobic slogans or words because we're not condemning one person you're labeling an entire swath of people who you had no beef with in the first place. That guy that you're calling a faggot may just be the guy you need to save your heterosexual ass one day. This XO will lose command of The Enterprise but I don't think he should be kicked out of the military. Perhaps a few classes on how to be mature would be in order.

In other words, race doesn't exist

Biologically... Well, there are two things here.
If we were entirely different races we wouldn't be able to procreate between groups. But there's a different
concept of "race" that defines each race as being different from each other but still being able to procreate,
such as some dogs for example.

Now... Culturally, no doubt there are, and they all have psychical and psychological differences

Since the differences between individuals within each group are so very much larger than the very small tendencies towards differences between the groups, it does not make sense to treat those groups as defining characteristics of people.

I agree that those characteristics aren't defining, but those characteristics have a huge role on how
people act and think about specific situations, people from different ethnics have different abilities and tendencies.

It's arguably wrong to treat those groups as being groups at all, let alone groups that define everyone.

As groups it isn't wrong. Defining everybody because of their group, partly, individuals can be a little different, but
they have their ancestors' genes, common behavior becomes a genetic characteristic when it's being reproduced for enough generations

Unsurprisingly, I can argue with that and I do.

There are some minor tendencies towards differences in certain groups of people

Agree, I never actually said there were huge differences, did I?

but they are far smaller than the differences between individuals within those groups. I'm not talking about
socialised differences here, but actual differences.

Such as? Any difference that is not psychical is a "socialized" difference, innate or not, still social
and developed through specific conditions those people had to live in. You might want to read something
about "Historical particularism", mainly exposed by Franz Boas

It's called satire folks...get over it. You can't please everyone, and I'd say that if it's been 4 years since these were made, and there are only now complaints coming out, someone has an agenda. It's easy to sit at home and point fingers from your lounge chair with your high-speed internet and unlimited TV channels, but until you have actually been on a months long deployment with not much to do but eat, work, and sleep your opinion means nothing to me. It can get very monotonous, and you have to be creative in your entertainment or you will go nuts.

I was on board the Enterprise while Capt Honors was XO. And I have to say, the productions he made were great. After working 12+ hours a day (and I had A/C at least) in 100+ degree heat, it was nice to watch something new and funny. Just like an episode that you had never watched before, it was something unique and different.

Crew morale was high because of these videos, and for the most part, a lot of us enjoyed them. The warnings at the beginning told you to leave if you didn't want to watch since you could be offended. Obviously, a few were disgruntled because they couldn't make a choice.

As usual, the media took its on slanted, biased look at it and played the "most offensive" video. The others that have been posted show Capt Honors as a fun guy who made light of a stressful situation. My theory on why these videos were brought out 4 YEARS after they were made was due to someone not liking Honors or someone not wanting to go on cruise.
