What you said is exactly what's wrong in this country- people become afraid because of one shocking incident (or a string of them) and TOTALLY overestimate the danger they are in. Thousands of people hitchhike every year, and the VAST MAJORITY of them do not get raped or murdered. It's not nearly as risky as people believe. Being stupid while hitching is- sometimes you've gotta turn down a ride if it doesn't feel right. Hundreds of people die heat-related deaths each year- does that mean I should stay indoors with the AC blasting all Summer? Or does it mean I should be smart, stay hydrated, and trust my body when it's sending me signals to take a rest? |

Just kidding. I've done a lot of hitching in my day. Mostly in 3rd world countries though, where the average person uses the hitching system to get around. In the US, it's probably a bit more dangerous because it's so rare. *shrugs* But, yes, I can be naive at times... OH and I have a mean recipe for lentil casserole, if anyone's interested ;) |

There is no way I would stop my car for her. I assume that she would stink and wouldn't stop talking about how she spent a year in Kenya and found herself and how poor yet selfless the people are and how my car is damaging the environment so I should change it for a hybrid or better yet a bicycle but not one made in malaysia because they use child labour and she'd tell me that she doesn't eat any meat and it has to be in season and local or better yet foraged and she has a great recipe for lentil casserole and she'll tell me that she hasn't got a job not because she's lazy but because she chooses not to be a part of the captalist machine, so instead she just collects welfare cheques from the capitalist machine, and she'll tell me how people judges her based on how she looks, whilst simultaneously calling people "suits" and implying that people in suits all inherit the same moral compases and life values. Just an assumption. BUT NOT IN MY CAR! |

Thats why TSA wasn't doing extensive body searches BEFORE the terrorist attacks right? Or why the Halloween before 9/11, I handed out 2 giant bowls worth of candy, only to have just ONE trick or treater the following year?
Then again, there are no more or fewer pedos than there were 50 years ago... Just easier access to their identities. There are no more or fewer rapes than there were 50 years ago, just more people coming out about it... The problems haven't gotten bigger... Just our ability to see them. So sure, the numbers have gone up, but that doesn't mean they OCCUR more, just that they're REPORTED more.
Sure, I agree that we are just as safe now as we were before... Apparently you didn't read that I find the fact that people are scared due to all this nonsense is RETARDED... People are afraid of everything they THINK is out there, and as a society we grow weaker for it. |
