anything with the word freedom in it's name has always sounded corny to me. McGovern's name is better IMHO. |

i live in gateway plaza, about 50 yards from the site, i moved in last year and i have seen this thing grow from virtually nothing, to what it is now! it even has little festive christmas lights on every floor!
cant wait to see it finished! |

There is nothing wrong with the name Freedom Tower, 1776 not only refers to it's height but the year of America's 'Freedom', Our declaration of independence.
It's going to be a beautiful building when it's finished, Along with the others around it. |

only nobody cares about the statue of liberty. we'd care more about the whitehouse being attacked than the statue of lib being attacked. the thought 'meh, somebody bombed a pile of copper with less than 50 people in it.' comes to mind. |

Really? Has everyone gotten so butthurt by the stereotype Europe has made of the US that they're afraid of looking like a redneck for using the word "freedom"? I fail to understand how somebody could be that impressionable.
Remember what that word means, because this is an example of why we are losing it in this country. |

Now, on the actual topic.
1776 feet was a great idea. 1776 was the year of American Independence. It gives the impression of a sophisticated response rather than a blunt "AMERICA MAKE BIGGER!" response.
It is already taller than the original tower. It's the perfect height.
The "One World Trade Center" is again a sophisticated call out, and sounds like a thoughtful, unifying name. This seems to be the name they're going for.
"Freedom tower" just brings to mind a combination of reactionary politics, bad Mel Gibson movies, "Freedom fries", 1984 doublespeak, and Bush Truthiness.
