Didn't it explode because the guy fired it rapidly causing the gun to overheat? I forgot where I watched it, (Military channel I think), but they told something similar. |

There's a town in Pakistan near Khyber Pass where the main economic activity for the locals is manufacturing firearms and ammo. Needless to say, the manufacturing is low tech and low quality.

It is possible a round was booby trapped. An old trick was to fill a casing here and there with c4, leave it a cache to be used an enemy. Old trick, possible but not probable. I agree with Steve Holt. |

You have no idea what you are talking about.
The firing pin in an AK is free floating, making it impossible to strike with any real force from an open bolt.It won't even let you put it in wrong. 9 times out 10 when you see a gun blow up like this it's from bad head-spacing or bad ammo (i.e. bulged case,improperly seated primer).
I build guns, and I've worked on them for years.
And yes, I have an AK. |

Apparently Allah was upset that they invoked his name over something so stupid as emptying a magazine.
It could have been any number of causes, one bullet stuck in the barrel being one of them. Could have also been a head spacing issue. Could have been ammo that was loaded too hot for the weapon. If it was a stamped receiver instead of a milled receiver, it would also be a much weaker firearm.
"double feed" is a misnomer, a double feed is not a problem with feeding but a FTE (failure to extract/eject) the previous casing. |

willtrottier is bang on,(pun intended)
You physically cannot charge a mag wrong. It wasn't a double feed, you can't double feed it like a machine gun. A plugged gas return would just cause the bolt to partially return, and wouldn't load the next round.
I would bet money it was a dud round. A blocked barrel is the only thing that can cause such a catastrophic malfunction in that particular weapon.
