As a library employee, I can tell you it doesn't matter that there was a fire, nor does it matter who can attest to it. When she signed up for a library card she agreed to take full responsibility for all checked out items. If she cannot return the materials, she signed her name agreeing to pay for them. Individual circumstances don't matter. Anyone can come up with any number of actual reasons not to pay for unreturned materials. Lady needs to pay up and the rest of America needs to shut up. |

Huh? Are you saying that you are not surprised that (pick one)...
1) a person that looks like her is in jail?
2) Texans would likely jail someone with a that sort of look on his/her face?
3) she would not return books, because of how she looks?
4) she didn't return the books because she looks like she couldn't read and wanted to look literate by keeping the books so she could say to people calling her bluff that she does, in deed, have books that she borrowed from the library?
or (finally)...
Are you saying that, because of her looks, you now simply lack the general sensation of surprise about anything?

read carefully now. She was jailed for not appearing for court. The reason she was supposed to be in court was for the $200+ in overdue library books. She wasn't jailed for the books.
The article says she claims her house burned down with the books and she can prove it. So why didn't she show up to court and prove it? |
