If you see the movie and get it, this isn't hard to understand

@duffytoler, You think Vanilla Sky was a good movie? I just wanted to let you know you're garbage and I hate you. Abre Los Ojos is the original Vanilla Sky, its in spanish, which sucks, but even with subtitles its worlds better than the Tom Cruise version. Please, never give an opinion on a movie again.

@goaliejerry: Yeah, that's what I've been saying. It's a straightforward movie.

@davy: Any scene with Michael Caine is real. Also, the spinning thingy is wobbling at the end.

I haven't seen this movie yet. I can't wait till I finally do. I hope it doesn't end with my IQ decreased.

I just watched it for the first time and I'm surprised so many people miss such an important clue. In the first half of the film he keeps checking his totem, except after he visits the catacomb of sleepers. He freaks out, drops the totem and never double checks. This is the beginning of the dream, to plan an Inception in him to rid him of the guilt of his ex. It also explains why the agents in the lower levels were so tough..they were his.

@davymid I think the top was wobbling but not actually staying up or falling leaving it at a mysterious ending.

Davy, isn't the wife just memories from Leonardo? She's only there when Leonardo's character is in the dream.

@davymid

Nope, and in fact the scene where she jumps is a little weird because shes across from him rather than just outside the window. There are also loads of other "dream" things in the "real" world like the closing alleyway to escape. Michael Cane also tells him to "wake up" and "come back to reality", and the dream machine just works right with no explanation of how, kind of like when you dream something and it just happens you don't pay attention to the how or why. The bit at the end when he sees his kids and they are in the -exact- positions he remembers when he saw them last is certainly not a coincidence. IT WAS ALL A DREAMMMMMMmmmmmmmm.......... xD

The only scenes that are "real life" are the final ones; the airport and Cobb finally seeing his children in the flesh.

Actually, if you watch the very end of the movie, where he spins his little top, it doesn't fall (or does it?). Which would insinuate that he's still in the dream, and that his wife escaped back up one level into true reality by "killing herself" by jumping from that hotel window.

Or did I mess that up?

No, no, no.

The Architect is there to incept the idea within Cobb that he can go home again. Fischer is part of the team.

The only scenes that are "real life" are the final ones; the airport and Cobb finally seeing his children in the flesh.

Everything else is dream. Jesus, people.

A good movie the the "wait what?" is The Prestige and The Illusionist.
I still loved this movie though it was epic.
This chart didn't enlighten me at all..

"Nothing stood out as "WOW, I missed that last time""

Because there isn't anything like that. They literally tell you exactly what each person and place is.

You want that "oh, I missed that" feeling? Watch Big Lebowski.

Also, the whole "lets position everyone in the elevator for the kick" scene was 30 min TOO LONG.

Honestly, this movie was so over-hyped with the "ooooh, its so complicated." THEY F*CKING EXPLAIN IT CLEARLY IN THE MOVIE.

There is no deep, hidden meaning, its just a dream that is like a video game (with the game levels created in one person's mind) with different, deeper levels that run on different time scales.

It was cool, but there were no deep revelations, no secret mysteries. They tell you what is happening in clear language.

Oh, and Leonardo is.......

I just rewatched Inception. Wasn't as good on the second go. I knew what was gonna happen, so I was mostly impatient for the plot to continue. Nothing stood out as "WOW, I missed that last time". Still a good movie, but I have to postpone viewings until I forget the details, which I hadn't. Of course, I was paying a lot more attention to the movie than I usually do the first time I saw it (I was searching for clues if it all was a dream from about the first dream within a dream part).

By the way, the best movie mentioned in the thread so far is "The Usual Suspects", no contest.

So by that definition Davy, you would put fight Club into that category, for both the mindf*ck and the rewatch factor.

Absolutely. One of my favourite movies of all time.

Wierd, how different people think different films are 'minddrat' yet the same concept that is a total MF in my book appears in all of the aforementioned:- i.e. inception, total recall, matrix and vanilla sky, i.e. no way of knowing if your current reality is 'real' or not. Same in some ways for memento, where his short term memory means he can't verify what is portrayed as past 'reality', which imho makes memento the best of the bunch. The scene with the bitch from hell lying convicingly will strike a chord with anyone whose been on the wrong side of such tactics.
