It was also considered a health issue, but that was mainly because masturbation was being preached as the main cause of bad health. Circumcision was promoted as stopping masturbation and therefore stopping all the bad health caused by masturbation, and was seen as a health issue on that basis.
Just read the stuff from ~1800 to ~1900 and you'll see what I mean. They blamed masturbation for almost every health issue. |

Angillion, circumcision didn't originate to "stop boys from masturbating" it was mostly deemed as a health issue, and science now shows that, just like the rest of your body, there really isn't one. Some argue about the use of circumcision in preventing STD's, especially HIV, but regardless - it's not an anti-masturbation issue, at least that's not how it started.
It's a large part of the reason why it became custom in the USA, which is what I was referring to.
Bear in mind this was the time when they invented anti-masturbation devices such as chastity belts (no, they're not medieval) and penis-covering cages with spiked insides so that an erection would result in being stabbed by the spikes. It was the same in England, but people here learned better.

The reason for mutilating him shouldn't really come as a surprise to people in the USA. That's the reason why circumcision was established as a custom in your country in the first place.
Mutilating children's genitals is routine in the USA to stop them masturbating later...and it doesn't even work for that purpose anyway. So why are so many of you perpetuating a primitive, harmful custom that doesn't even serve the purpose for which it's intended, a purpose which most of you don't agree with anyway? Why not switch to a far more sensible custom, like stretching your earlobe piercings until the hole is big enough to put your head through? |

I was with a guy who still had his foreskin and the sex was alright, but we constantly had to re-adjust because it was being pulled back uncomfortably. Personally I think being with a circumcised guy is way better.
When it came to my son being circumcised, I never got a say in it. They took him while I was asleep the first night and did it, then had him back in under an hour, I think. |
