Mythbusters used both a salsa and sour cream based dip for that experiment, the latter of which contains said lactose... And Mythbusters uses genuine science to prove/disprove various myths. The entertainment is when they extend PAST the debunked myth to actually TRY to make the mythic result happen. (like when they debunked the cigarette in a gas filled toilet myth... They actually dropped a lit match into a toilet full of Nitro and it STILL barely worked....) |

Sharing bacteria through kissing or getting it into salsa does not have the same effect as getting it into milk or other drinks. Milk has the sugar lactose in it. Punch and other sweet drinks have the same problem.
Bacteria process these sugars and make waste. That is what makes it taste gross in a short time. It isn't bacteria that grosses me out; they're everywhere. It's consuming and tasting their waste products that's gross.
Salsa is loaded with salt which would kill the bacteria by pulling the water out of the cells due to the osmotic gradient. Even if they didn't die, there isn't enough sugar for them to eat, poop, and spoil the flavor. And saliva doesn't keep oral bacteria alive. The food and sugar you eat does. It's the acidic waste product from these bacteria that dissolve your teeth and give you cavities.
Mythbusters is a good show and it's entertaining, but many of their experiments and conclusions are flawed. |

What's the difference, as megann suggested, in her kissing her boyfriend and drinking from the milk carton? Or even if she wasn't drinking from the carton, what's the differenc in her sharing a glass of milk with her boyfriend? Germs still get transferred, and actually, it's probably MORE unsanitary for people to kiss each other than it is for people to drink from the same cup.
So if this is so unsanitary, then people should stop kissing, and stop having sex and just reproduce by artificial insemination because *gasp* someone might have GERMS! Oh NOES! Pfft. |

For those complaining about the sanitary issue of drinking straight from the carton, check your MythBusters trivia.
They experimented with the myth involving double dipping (dipping a chip, biting it, then dipping again) and found that no bacteria were transferred directly to the batch of food. They came up with the explanation that bacteria from the mouth isnt transferred because though our mouths TOUCH the food we eat, the food often DOESNT carry enough to grow and they die off. Those bacteria that live in our mouths require chemicals in our saliva to live. Once those are gone, they die. |

The likely hood of transferring an illness is not very great, however; modern sanitation morays include NOT SWAPPING BACTERIA/GERMS/VIRUS/PARASITES as much as possible.
