Thursday, November 11, 2010 9:23:53 AM Well how about all of the politicians' fat pension cheques? 54 cents of each of the taxpayer's dollar goes to "manditory spending" which includes welfare, SSI, ect. only 13% of that is for unemployment. I'm sure when you're 80 you'll want medicaid and social security too. The government has been doing it for almost as long as our country has existed. Everyone need to quit their bitching and rather than look at everything else around them, look at themselves. This is a good example. You are part of the problem, like it or not. You can use both sides of the paper, quit smoking and recycle all you want you still make waste and similarly you still spend some of the government's money. After all a little piece of what they take out of your cheque at the end of the week in social security which I assume you intend to collect. And there is such a thing as private police/fire dept. Be thankful to be alive and well off enough to be on a computer right now not on a sewing machine in a |

Wednesday, November 10, 2010 8:53:22 AM "So, stay off the highways and roads, never call the police, fire department or other emergency services, don't bitch about salmonella in your groceries or poisons in your water, air, workplace, stay out of the public library, send your kids/grandkids to private schools, and private colleges, forget about complaining about inappropriate content on the tv and radio, forget about the development of new medical procedures to treat cancer, obesity and other diseases, forget about development of new industries, safer vehicles, etc. Give up having courts to protect your rights from corrupt officials, criminals, and people who just hate you." Oh just stop it. I'm so tired of the "what about the fire department" argument. Even if you added all those up it would be a fraction of where our money goes (except the military - which creates more enemies for us than it protects us from). The vast majority of our tax money is spent on the BS welfare |

Wednesday, November 10, 2010 8:47:10 AM To all those people who think this guy is being "soooo selfishzzz!1111!!!": Give me a break! You expect somebody to work 40 hours a week while somebody else is getting MORE MONEY to sit at home doing nothing and live off the government dole? That he should sacrifice 50% of his waking life for "the good of society"? Puh-leeaaase!! The problem is that unemployment benefits are too high! Why work when you make more doing nothing? Nobody is going to do that. What they should do is do away with unemployment all together, and replace it with a system where they set up a bunch of minimum wage jobs, and if you lose your job, you can take one of those. Then watch the unemployment rate drop like a rock as all these people who supposedly "can't find work" magically find a job in no time. |

Monday, November 08, 2010 7:37:08 AM @dubtac= we have a democracy, that really about as good as it can get... the problem isn't the system, its the people. for democracy to work well, it requires an interested, intelligent, educated population. On top of that you have all the people within this system that have a very egocentric position. Everyone is "all about me and mine, screw the other guy" which is all fine and good if its a friend of yours, but not if you are the other guy. The libertarians, communist, socialist, ect. have all formed their systems with the idea that man should care about and help his fellow man. Until we as a species realize that the our support system is made up not only of the people around us, but also of the plants and animals, we aren't likely to make much headway. Your logic is sound, but the problem isn't the motor itself, or any of the mechanical parts, its the idiot that keeps flipping it from high to full reverse without engaging the clutch. |

Friday, November 05, 2010 4:47:15 AM "The U.S. could save a lot of money by just not helping other countries and defending other countries. Close all military bases overseas. Let the U.S. become more isolationist." Do you seriously believe that America has bases all over the world out of selfless generosity? Let me be clear: America has bases all over the world in order to insure its on defence; by being able to engage any aggressor on their own territory, it means that America does not have to engage them on their own. I'm essentially a pacifist, but even I can see the sense in that. |

Friday, November 05, 2010 2:26:38 AM God this sort of thing makes me angry. I know a single mother who had two kids as a life plan. She's never worked a day in her life and gets more money than I do and I'm working 45 hour weeks. |

Thursday, November 04, 2010 8:31:05 PM Howlingwolf, I don't think the contractors would mind at all. As soon as the US military stopped providing security throughout the world, the armed forces would be much smaller, and private security companies would swell with new recruits which they would then hire out to police the places the US left behind. The CEO's would be sending the president Christmas cards, taxpayers wouldn't be paying for an international presence, and politically we'd be free. While you say Pearl Harbor was caused by our Isolationism, I say 9/11 was caused in part by the extent of our reach. The truth of the matter is that (especially around these boards) the rest of the world thinks we are fat and dumb, like the Roman Empire before its collapse. And I say if you don't appreciate the assistance, bring it somewhere that it will be appreciated. Failing that, if you want to keep calling us an Empire, I say we show you what an Empire is. |

Thursday, November 04, 2010 4:01:03 PM CzarElad, that's one of the dumbest things I've ever read. Trying to keep out nose out of other people's wars is what prompted the attack on Pearl Harbor, you numb nuts. It didn't work out for us very well then did it? |

Thursday, November 04, 2010 3:41:58 PM @CzarElad, Just to clarify your statement, we didn't defend "Europe", since Germany and Italy are part of Europe too. Other than that, isolationism might work for other countries but unfortunately the US has invested itself too much in the future of other countries to envision a worldwide elimination of all overseas bases. Not to mention the impossible to overcome backlash which military contractors would unleash upon the US gov't if even a hint of eliminating bases surfaced. |

Thursday, November 04, 2010 2:42:34 PM There are armies of this guy. Individuals with 5 second attention spans, horrible handwriting, no concept of responsibility and they're pretty sure they're right. They jump from job to job and are more than likely todays un or under employed. They are the spawn of the Palins. The Situation gets plucked off the streets of Jersey makes $5million and can't even imagine his success because he knew it would happen. That's who this douchebag is. He's the guy who doesn't have insurance. Liked it just fine the way it was and why not? Things will always work out. Social services were invented in a time where a mans work ethic was everything. Out of a depression, flush with cash and sick of seeing old people begging on the streets, our country got together, invented and implemented a safety net. They didn't mean for it to help this nitwit it's just sorta morphed into this. As drated up as this situation seems, it's nothing compared to our military spending. Of the two, this is Ok by me. |

Thursday, November 04, 2010 1:58:47 PM The U.S. could save a lot of money by just not helping other countries and defending other countries. Close all military bases overseas. Let the U.S. become more isolationist. Let the rest of the world defend their own borders, fight their own wars and when a disaster strikes find others to help them. In two world wars, we defended europe because they got themselves into war. |

Thursday, November 04, 2010 1:00:01 PM As a public/gov consultant I can tell you that my 33% taxes + prop taxes + sales taxes could be used better. If we held goverment to a higher standard a little socialism and a lot of personal responsibilty would work great. I like all those services, I just want them done well and for the right price. I want all dead weight trimmed. I want no services that support freeloading(reasonable safety nets excluded). Public funds should not be used for endowments or failing programs or any service that is not vanilla. NPR not vanilla, no tax money. When I say vanilla I don't mean boring, because they are that. We have well over 30 language translations for welfare and socal services. Why? English is the common language. No one who is raised here or has reasonable rights to the systems is bereft of english. Massive expense not needed. We have expensive studies on how to make welfare users FEEL better about the system. Why? And it goes on... |

Thursday, November 04, 2010 12:42:53 PM America was intended to provide equal opportunity not equality of outcome like in Finland. There can't be "equality of opportunity" if the people at the bottom can't even stand up without getting kicked down by something or other. Just saying. Americans are very intelligent and smart. We watch Fox, ABC, NBC, CNN, SeeBS, and yes even the quacks at MSNBC. Ha... Ha ha... Ha ha ha... AH HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA...! Ha ha... Ha... Stop... Please, stop... I... I can't breathe... Omigod... That was funny! Wait... Don't tell me... You're... You're not ACTUALLY SERIOUS, are you? Wow... I'm not even going bother with this any further... We must teach each other correct principles of giving generously and helping others by our own choice. Yep. We need more Andrew Carnegie's. @Baal: Thanks, I've been looking around for that "Spending vs. life expectancy" |

Thursday, November 04, 2010 11:35:43 AM @Heureux- While I agree with your point- that people who bitch about taxes should stop taking for granted all of the things that they are used for- I think you overestimate the role of government just a tad. |

Thursday, November 04, 2010 10:19:20 AM "My wife and lose 25% of our income right out of our paychecks to taxes, that's 10 hours out of every 40 I work that I give away, then we pay property tax of a couple grand every year, we claim 0 exemptions on our pay and still owe 2000$-3000$ every year in additional taxes, and we pay sales tax," So, stay off the highways and roads, never call the police, fire department or other emergency services, don't bitch about salmonella in your groceries or poisons in your water, air, workplace, stay out of the public library, send your kids/grandkids to private schools, and private colleges, forget about complaining about inappropriate content on the tv and radio, forget about the development of new medical procedures to treat cancer, obesity and other diseases, forget about development of new industries, safer vehicles, etc. Give up having courts to protect your rights from corrupt officials, criminals, and people who just hate you. |

Thursday, November 04, 2010 9:30:50 AM lil... Did I say "We want everyone to be covered" by Insurance? or the Government? I thought I said, we are charitable and would like all poor people to have basic medical care, food, and housing. I didn't say the Government should provide it by taking money from everyone, creating a bureaucratic office, which will pay more federal workers way to much money in salary and benefits and hire way more workers than a private company or religious organization would to offer help to the less fortunate. As far as trendy giving... yes that happens, but it is still giving isn't it? Here is an interesting article about our generosity click here for "A Nation of Givers" Not bad for even trendy people don't you think? Scroll to [quote">Q. Aren’t people who favor social spending j |
