pistols are rifled, making the bullets spin. this makes the trajectory of the bullet more of a straight line because of the gyroscopic effect. this means the bullets spin really fast. its not magic, its not some special effect from the ice, save the the ice absorbed just enough of the forward momentum to let it ricochet and land near enough to observe. this is all due to the gyroscopic effects of the spinning bullet. |

I live in Alaska...where shallow lakes can freeze solid, and deeper lakes can have ice that is 6 feet or more thick. If the caliber of the weapon isn't so high, ice that thick can prevent the bullet from penetrating through depending on the angle. When a firearm is fired, the bullet spins through the barrel. It just keeps spinning when it hits the ice. (Yawn) |

The lake they were sanding on was probably a few feet thick, and even if it wasn't im sure a few little holes wouldn't do much to the structural integrity of the ice. I have even heard multiple stories of people having fires on the ice during ice-fishing season so it isnt that far of a stretch. |

So why s the back of the bullet nice and shiny pretty sure gunpowder leaves residue. Also that gun sounds like a painball gun firing not a pistol. I also don't see why it would land that close to them something at that velocity I would think it would travel farther and be hard to find they managed it multiple times. Wouldn't it ricocheting also change how the bullet spins?
Okay, here's the thing. They were firing a pistol on to solid ice.
Last time I checked ice is harder than water if a bullet gets deformed in water I would think a bullet hitting ice would have an effect on its shape. |

@McGovern1981, the bullets shown in your link were all hollow points or soft nosed. The bullet in the vid had a full jacket.
Also, bullet deformation is cause partly by heating of the metal. Shooting into ice might have some effect on this as well.
Finally, a pistol had a much lower muzzle velocity than a rifle -- typically about half.
All these factors could account for the difference. |

Okay, here's the thing. They were firing a pistol on to solid ice. The Mythbusters video you showed had them firing a very high caliber rifle into water. Those are two completely different things. The only similarities were that they were firing at H2O with a gun, which is a very general thing to say. That's like saying a bb would go through a solid steel wall because your .22 went all the way through plywood. Something from a gun went through a wall, right? |

BS FAKE FAKE FAKE!! A bullet fired into solid ice will not be in perfect shape that will deform it water and sand can too.

not to metion when a bullet riochets it begins to spin in different ways countering at least somewhat its initial spin. Why would it land on the tip and spin like a top? how could it ricochet out of the hole it created at that angle? |

Theres no way that this is faked. Who would come up with the idea of making a fake video of spinning bullets on ice? Its just a strange occurrence that can probably be explained easily, but I cant see why you would fake it |

Steelgrid: Bullets fired into ice don't usually break up, That also goes for bullets and liquid water, sand, and a few other materials as well.
The ice has very little friction so it's able to stop the forward momentum of the bullet without stopping it from spinning.
Now having said that, Shooting into ice or water is not generally a very good idea. Ricochets have killed people, So please don't attempt this. |

After updating all plug-ins and manually installing SWF plug-in, I never did get it to work on-site in Firefox. IE would show the first frame, but no video.

I have no idea, but to me standing on a frozen lake and shooting bullets into it is stupid? Was half expecting the ice to crack and see them fall in the freezing water. |

I would have to say this is faked. Now mind you for all the ignorance this group shares (ie, Guns spin the bullets when fired) I cant imagine that a bullet this small would hop out of the ice once it hit and there would be no deformations. If the ice is strong enough to bounce the bullet back then the bullet would be deformed. if the ice is too weak to NOT bounce the bullet back, well, you would have no spin.
Also BOTH times they were able to pull this off the camera panned away from the landing area prior to each shot.
Clever, but faked, sorry |

The impact area on the ice doesn't look like it's ricocheting. It looks like its just going into the ice. Unless there is some weird effect from the rapid heating and cooling of the bullet, I would also expect anything that is hard enough to cause a ricochet to deform the bullet.
I'm skeptical, as the physics of it don't make sense. However I can't figure out a way they could have faked it. The only clue (besides the trick itself) is the gunman's blatant disregard for muzzle awareness. F*ck, now I have to try it... |
