As water hardens into ice, the molecules begin to form an irregular crystalline structure (google if you don't know what this means), so yes, any form of ice (including a snowflake) would appear to be irregular and porous if you zoom in far enough. |

rough surface could be imperfections in the metallic coating. I doubt ice is that rough (porous too?? looks porous) |

Not to be a Negative Nancy, but couldn't they have just done the same thing with an ice cube once you get past a certain point of recognition?
(Nerd, sorry) Nah, the reason they grow into a perfect crystal form is that they have space to grow into, as opposed to being compressed. Like quartz crystals will grow into a geode or void with perfect form, but not so in a body of granite.
I'm guessing these pictures were taken with a scanning tunneling electron microscope, Those are pretty incredible machines themselves.
Not sure crakr, from the magnification, could just be an SEM (scanning electron microsope).

maybe, but I'm guessing that the micro-structure of an ice cube would look different. After the shape of a snowflake doesn't come from a mold- it is the product of the arrangement of the frozen water molecules. |
