Friday, October 22, 2010 11:24:55 AM @deathxtra You mean the force by which all mass within the universe is attracted to all other masses in the universe proportional to the product of their mass? As I am still quite firmly grounded to the earth and the earth is still roughly the planets are still roughly the same distance from the sun and all other stars...I'd say Gravity is still very much a Law. F = G(m1m2/r2) |

Friday, October 22, 2010 11:18:24 AM @Musuko42 Quick break down for you. People mis-use the term "Theory" when they say "Just a Theory." what they really mean is "Just a Hypothesis". A Hypothesis is an "Educated Guess Based On Observation" a Theory however is so much more, it summarizes and a Hypothesis after repeated testing of a Hypothesis. For something to become a Scientific Theory, there must no eveidence to dispute it. For something to be scientific LAW at the time of its creation, there must be no exceptions must be found to that law. Scientific method is structured so that Science can grow. But if something is a "Theory" rest assured it got that way only after everything else at the time had been ruled out and if it is LAW even more so.

Thursday, October 21, 2010 8:38:21 PM A theory, in scientific terms, is an explanation that has so much evidence to support it that it's pretty much fact. However, in the sciences, nothing is "fact" -- here's why: Go with the theory of plate techtonics. We have evidence from earthquakes, volcanoes, mountains, deep sea rifts, etc. Other disciplines like chemistry and biology have evidence to support plate techtonics too. The general population believes that plate techtonics is fact, but scientists say "theory" instead. Again, nothing is "fact" since evidence can come along at any time to disprove the theory or some part of it. Science instead takes new evidence and makes a better explanation. Lots of evidence = theory. That's why theories, like evolution, are so strong. DNA + time = mutations -> mutations + time = genetic divergence (e.g. appearance of human races) -> divergence + time = evolution If evolution weren't real, how do we explain DNA, mutations, immunizat |

Thursday, October 21, 2010 3:53:48 AM Note that laws and theories are two very different things. Theories do not "graduate" into laws when they get strong enough proof. Laws are the observable "rules" of how things work. Theories are the explanations that stitch the rules together and explain why they are as they are. And that's just my vague understanding of it. "Just a theory" is not an insult. It's like saying "just an explanation". |

Thursday, October 21, 2010 3:49:26 AM polglowa, educate yourself: a scientific law is not what you think it is. bowlinguy, you are mistaking the meaning of a scientific theory to how you or I might use the word theory in day to day life. |

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 12:12:25 PM @Musko42; last i checked theory does mean unproven. its basically an educated guess, not a wild guess. rather one that stated as being most probably due to the facts given. once it is proven then it becomes a law. just like the LAW of gravity. |

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 10:56:45 AM @ Musuko42 "Theory" of gravity? I think not. It's the "Law of Gravity". Bad example and bad explanation on your part. A Theory is a proposed explanation based on facts. However, a theory does not a fact make! |

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 10:35:31 AM "yes, they are only theories" Anyone who says that is showing that they don't know what the word "theory" means when used in a scientific context. It does not mean "wild guess". Nor does it imply a lack of proof. I cite the THEORY of gravity, for example. A scientific theory is the explanation of an observed fact. That's all it means. It does NOT mean "unproven". |

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 10:26:26 AM Max_Normal: You call yourself educated, but I think you had better do some more research on the theories (yes, they are only theories) that you say the "morons" are denying. I would say that the moron here is the brainwashed idiot that believes anything he is told without questioning it. a.k.a. YOU! |
