He seems more deserving than the previous recipient.

Hell's bells, I was more deserving than the previous recipient.

Serikos, you seem to think there are only two alternatives: to be ruled by the mob (democracy), or to be ruled by the elite (dictatorship.) There is a third way: to be ruled by law -- a written code that applies equally to all, protects the rights of individuals, and constrains both the mob and the dictator.

Unfortunately our constitutional republic has long since degenerated into a democracy, and is quickly headed toward dictatorship.

I can't stand the prospect of a democracy without educating its people to the best of its ability. Perhaps the elite making the decisions is preferable to the later. I'm not suggesting that they should, though I am suggesting that the true quality of a society is only measured in the clarity of thought of its inhabitants. Bluntly put to clarify my argument, how easy they are to lie to, or to rally to an unethical cause.

Ya know... All of this, to me, boils down to a rather simple question... "Why are the people in power so terribly afraid of people gaining knowledge and information?" They control the flow of information (good luck searching for Tienanmen Square or women's rights in China), and therefore think they control the power. They're mostly right. They know (as does every other nation with free speech) that if they allow the free flow of any information, their entire regime crumbles. In summation, I cannot stand dictatorships.

It was a ruthless dictatorship nonetheless Oldfrt. Furthermore, whenever any nation became "communist" it was something else altogether. The Chinese does NOT like dissent (or the autonomous Tibetans or the Falun Gong for that matter). Any citizen of the PRC who's ever talked of dissent has been harassed, jailed, or beaten.

Sorry Cajun247, but the Nazi's were socialists. Also, Mussolini claimed that he was a life long socialist. Fascism was (and is) a branch of the socialist spectrum. It got labeled as "right wing" by Stalin, who still thought of it as a type of socialism, just too much TOWARD the right. He never meant that Fascism is right wing in the manner of what we call conservatism (which is actually classical liberalism)

There was nothing socialist about Nazi Germany other than the acronym NSDAP.
Try looking up "fascist Germany".

no such thing as communism

That's much closer to the truth actually. Strictly speaking it sounds like a good idea on paper but someone (Lenin) tried to put in practice and failed miserably. Stalin, Mao, and Ho Chi Minh have ruled under the guise of "Communism".
As for Nazi Germany the party in charge (Nazis) used all sorts of Democratic and pseudo-Parliamentarian tactics to gain control of the Reichsrat and Reichstag and then eventually dissolve both of them giving Hitler full power.
Communism in the strictest sense is about dividing up the wealth and handing it out equally among the population <ahem>impossible<ahem> while Hitler, Stalin, Kims, and Ho Chi Minh were all about power.
Like you said they never had policies so "everything could be shared equally" they were in it for themselves (like almost every politician).

Nazi Germany is (or was) officially labeled a Nationalist Single-Party State.

Cajun247, did you pull that poo out of your own @$$ or somebody else's?

Google "national socialist workers party" (in quotes) and you get 79,200 hits. Google "Nationalist Single-Party State" (again in quotes) and you only get 59 hits, the term never appears in title case, and not one of the articles is talking about Germany.

The degree to which liberals are able to deceive themselves never ceases to amaze me.

So, I guess what you're saying is that there's no such thing as communism.

Can you name one communist country in history where everything was shared equally?

Which is why they're not called communist states but Stalinist dictatorships. Nazi Germany is (or was) officially labeled a Nationalist Single-Party State.
Even North Korea is known as a Stalinist/Maoist (or both) dictatorship.

cobrakiller, you do a very good job of parroting what your liberal teachers have told you, but you and they are dead wrong. Can you name one communist country in history where everything was shared equally? Of course not. Nowhere in the world has communism EVER been about sharing anything but fear, misery, and poverty.

Whatever you call them, all statist regimes are based on some combination of government ownership and government control, and they're always run by a relatively small privileged group.

Liberals would like us all to forget that the full name of the Nazi party was the National SOCIALIST Workers Party. The Nazis hated the communists in the same was the Bloods hate the Crips: they're just two groups of thugs fighting over the same turf, and there's not a dime's worth of difference between them.

Good for him. Someday China may be free but not until World War III ... That's my new slogan ... China Free (after) World War III! I'm being facetious btw. But seriously, good for him.

old ollie, actually fascism is much different than communism/socialism. fascism is when the government is all powerful, owns everything, and only a few individuals have all of the wealth. in communism, everything is shared equally between all people. opposing sides of the spectrum. so in reality, china is closer to fascism than communism, as is north korea. its strange that they call themselves communist, probably just because it sounds better.

China isn't really "communist"

If you are going to insist on purity, then you cannot describe any government on earth without a 3000-word essay. The fact is, China is just about as communist as you can get. The government owns most of the land, industries, and institutions, and what they don't own they control with absolute power.

Statist governments (communist, socialist, fascist, or whatever -- they're all pretty much the same) have learned that they don't need to own a business in order to control it. It's much cheaper and easier for them to let someone else bear all the expense, risk, and headaches of ownership while they dictate policy and take the lion's share of the profits.
