Wednesday, October 06, 2010 10:47:22 PM I could have sworn I saw something twice its size on TV before. Some guy compared another spider to that tarantula, and it was like twice as big. Skinny legs though. |

Saturday, October 02, 2010 10:57:01 AM Dada is right. (curious whether you're on any of the forums actually - it would be cool to chat with you) I'm doing my PhD in arachnology and although the information in this clip was factually accurate, it was totally dramaticised. Firstly, the geographical range of them was a bit exaggerated - granted, Avicularia sp is found throughout, Psalmopeus irminia comes from Venezuela and what looks like Lasiodora parahybana is also found in South America much like T.blondi (the focus of the clip), they are separated b huge distances! - I was impressed they were all South American UNTIL they showed Citharischius crawshayi which is African. This proves these were probably just all put there and not found wild. PLUS, the bald patch on the T.blondi's abdomen showed it had been pestered a lot by the film crew probably and the patches on the femurs showed quite a post-moult specimen... |

Saturday, October 02, 2010 8:41:09 AM @dada i seriously respect you for being able to do something i could NEVER do. my fear of spiders is a full blown phobia, even the smallest, tiniest dot of a spider completely freaks me out and stops me in my tracks. also thanks for the information, it's good to hear from someone who knows what they're talking about. |

Saturday, October 02, 2010 12:41:34 AM "I really don't get why people are afraid of these things. I don't want one crawling on me and I think it would make for a lousy pet, but what is actually creepy or scary about it?" It's called biological preparedness. If you look at the most common phobias (spiders, snakes, heights, the dark, etc) you see that they have an evolutionary basis in things that have been dangerous to humans throughout their evolutionary history. Therefore you are biologically "primed" wherein one negative encounter with these things will create a much stronger psychological reaction and an incentive to aviod them in the future. The effect on spiders is the exact opposite. Millenia of reducing Earth's top predator thousands of times their size into screaming little girls when they crawl on their leg has given them a bad attitude. |

Friday, October 01, 2010 6:58:08 PM Christ why did I feel the need to watch that??? Though I did get a good laugh at whocares3725's comment. ""No one has ever died from a tarantula bite" No, but I'm sure a lot of perfectly good pants have had to been thrown away because of them." LOL Agreed! |
