He totally made it. First of all, the primary rule of neighborhood stunt jumping was that you always made sure the daredevils short jumps were passed where the dumb, talentless kid's body would be. Secondly, he's still on his way up. |

My brother jumpped 5 trash cans in the alley by our house when I was a kid. And later, he jumpped 3 or 4 kids laying down side by side. He just passed away last March just short of his 50th birthday. Mostly due to drinking and drugs. |

We did far worse than that when I was a boy. Without helmets, obviously. I didn't even see a bike helmet for sale when I was a boy.
I tried to jump a river once. I had no clue and no sense of what could or couldn't be done. I hadn't even checked how deep it was.
Probably the most stupid thing I did on a bike was the downhill run that had me overtaking cars and which broke my speedo. Stupid because there was a road at the bottom of the valley and there was no way I could have stopped for it.
Regaining consciousness in a skip was another high point. I was pretty sure that I could stand on the saddle and pretend I was surfing, if I was going fast enough first. Maybe I did for a few seconds before I flew off into the empty skip at the side of the road, but I don't remember the crash or what caused it. I was riding a Chopper, which made it even more stupid.
Young and dumb...I'm amazed that I didn't even break any bones. |

In my day I used to jump my 40 pound Schwinn Hurricane off a homemade ramp made of scrap wood, a street sign and bricks... barefoot, shirtless... helmet? what the hell is that? ...oh, and Evel Knievel was GOD! |
