"right, i am neither for or against the pope, but lets get one thing straight, he opposes condoms but he also says you shouldn't be having sex with anyone other than your husband/wife. if you have aids, and ur married, then i guess you will spread it to your immediate family, but having sex with someone who is not your spouse and spreading it round is not the popes fault."

By discouraging the use of condoms even within marriage he is discouraging the husband or wife of a cheater from protecting themselves. He is also discouraging people from controlling their own reprduction, which in a poor country life Africa is escential. Africa has food shortages and chronic childhood disease with not nearly enough treament to go around. Safe sex is good and anyone who discourages it is irresponsible and immoral.

@Alfish: I agree; consistency in the choice of the structure of a sentence is quite under-appreciated these days.

Yeah, but seriously, how many people go without a condom because of the Pope? It's sort of a thing that people do without encouragement.

It should say "discriminating against" so that all the verbs are present participles. It would sound better that way.

/deicde the definition for what religion is. I'm sure you could find many differences in definition and argue semantics all day to decide whether or not Atheism fit the criteria.

However there are clearly big differences between atheism and religion.

@Baalthazag

"You getting upset about it doesn't change anything, nor do I think you should be."

First off I am not upset, and you have no reason to think I am. I believe your are simply trying to undermind my arguement by making me sound irrational. Further, I have given you qualitative differences. Religious beliefs involve super natural beings (among the other things that I previously mentioned).

Druids did believe in supernatural beings and forces, they may not have had an omnipotent god figure, but they did believe in super natural beings and forces. So no they would not be disqualified as a religion.

Also, I like how you only gave us half of the definition of religion (from dictionary.com?). Here's the a full definition of religious:

a set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe, esp. when considered as the creation of a superhuman agency or agencies.

See the last part there kind of make

The definition of religion does not include God or gods, as it would rule out various forms of deism and druidism.

The definition, which I have provided, is of religion. Atheism fits (a set, can include a single item).

You getting upset about it doesn't change anything, nor do I think you should be. It just means you have to qualify the difference qualitatively instead of "Ha! Look we're different cos we don't have the same title!"

Qualitative differences now please.

"A set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe".

The problem is that atheism is not a set of beliefs. It is just one belief. That there is not a god.

I guess it would be easier for people to look at it differently, atheists are "without god" and theists are basically "god-ists".

Now the god-ists believe in things like supernatural beings, Sacred Objects, Sacred Places, Sacred Times, Have Rituals focused on Sacred Objects, Places, and Times, Moral Codes with Supernatural Origions, Prayer and other forms of communication with a Supernatural being. Religion is an orginization of theists with a world veiw based on the things I have mentioned previously.

Yes athesists may sometimes have organization to them, so do soccer players, but it's not based on the other things that I have mentioned. That is what seperates Atheists from Religious people.

Yes, and those Muslim human rights activists-- oh wait-- no they kill you for disparaging their faith. Yeah, stick with anti-Christian-- much safer. Or, are you going to post a cartoon of Muhammad?

Nah-- didn't think so.

@Mvangeld I know what he said he meant and I've heard his explination behind it. However, I don't believe for one minute that he didn't deliberatley word it that way to be confusing and controversial.

And you are right condoms won't solve the problem, execept for in over 90% of cases.

"If you want to be sure that you are disease free, the only way to do that is through self-restraint"

What about the wife of a man who is messing around and doesn't know it? How is she effected if the use and distrabition of condoms are discouraged both in and outside of marriage? In my opinion condoms are good and anyone against them is bad, the end.

@Baalthazaq- there is no deity or religious text that atheists follow, which are two of the characteristics of a religion. without those two things it is considered a philosophy which is why Zen (not Zen Buddhism) is considered a philosophy rather than a religion.

""sure, blame victims"
At what point did I blame the victims? "
you clearly can't read, look up a line in my post
""It is your choice whether to have sex or not."
sure, blame victims"
would be the context in which i said that
we're talking about HIV, which is VERY frequently spread by rape

"I said you don't know anything about Catholicism. And your last sentence proves my point. Now I am finished."
here's what i said
"and you can't call somebody a 'sinner' who will 'burn in hell' and still say there's nothing 'evil' or 'bad' about them, that just doesn't make any drating sense"
and here's some definitions for you
sin-Sin, in religion, is the concept of acts that violate a known moral rule.
evil-Evil is intentionally causing harm or destruction, or deliberately violating some moral code.
Oh what's that? it's almost like sin and evil are somehow directly related. You're tr

Sorry, where I say "Arguably applies to religion" I meant "Arguably applies to Atheism", it is the definition of Religion.

Ooh, actually, sorry KMeTG, you misquoted in my favour.

The argument is supposed to be "Atheism is a religion, like Bald is a hair COLOUR", but your wording is "hairSTYLE".

Which works great, because bald is very much a hairstyle. I actually usually respond to the quote with your quote to demonstrate the point. "No, it's more like we're talking about style, not colour".

Also, there are no "Muslim churches". In the case of Christianity, it is also not necessary to go to them to be considered a Christian.

There are plenty of Atheist organizations (United Atheists to name one), and even a couple of churches and summer camps.

There are no tests it fails for "is it a religion".

"A set of beliefs concerning the cause, nature, and purpose of the universe".
Arguably applies to religion. "I don't got belief, I got facts" is not a sufficient argument to denounce belief as any opinion held. This includes the lack of God.

"That means not believing in leprechauns is a religion!". No, as they do not have anything to do with the cause, nature, and/or purpose of the universe.

"That means not believing in Thor is a religion!" Correct, only insomuch as you don't believe in any others. If you believe in Christ, that is your religion. If you tag none of the above, you have an opinion, and therefore a belief.

Belief:
"something believed; an opinion or conviction"
"confidence in the truth of something not immediately susceptible to rigorous proof"

Sorry, they fit. Easily. Just like Black is a hair color, though arguably not a color (it is the lack of color).

@rakoonhat

-Diaphragms
-Condoms
-Cervical Cap
-Contraceptive Sponges

all of these are forms of birth control that simply prevent the path of sperm to egg without 'tricking' the body into thinking it's pregnant.

Besides, I'm pretty sure we've all figured out that keeping birth control from teenagers is NOT an effective way to stop the smushing ¬__¬
