The actual origin of the phrase "rule of thumb", which predates the feminist propaganda about it by centuries, is the practice by artisans of using their own thumb as a convenient means of measuring distances - literally a rule of thumb rather than a rule of wood or a rule of metal.

Consider the meaning of the phrase - a reasonably accurate guide stemming from experience rather than theory. The connection with a skilled (i.e. experienced) artisan getting a reasonably accurate measurement using their thumb is clear. The connection with beating wives is...?

There was a case, early 1800s IIRC, definitely long after the phrase was invented, in which the enemies of a judge accused him of saying (not in court, i.e. not a ruling) that husbands should be able to do so, but (i) there's no evidence he did, (ii) it wouldn't have been law even if he did and (iii) he was ruined by the accusation because beating wives has always been almost universally condemned.

I thought rule of thumb was an ancient law that stated you couldn't whip your wives or servants with a stick thicker than your thumb.

That's what me pa use to tell us kids anyway.

That's just the usual feminist historical revisionism. It was made up ~1970. There never was any such law. English law is well documented for a long way back in time, so we can be sure of that. You might see Blackstone's Commentaries cited as a reference - that is a lie. It isn't in there.

It works like this:

Premise: Men *want* to oppress women, because men are like that.

Premise: Feminists are the heroes who stop them.

Conclusion: Prior to feminism gaining power, men oppressed women hugely.

So they make stuff up to fit their conclusion in order to fake evidence for their premises, which exist to promote prejudice agsinst men and support for feminism. Standard group politics, just more successful than most

Shouldn't the star in the pentagram be upside down?

If you look real hard, squint your eyes a wee bit and tilt your head to the left... you can kinda make out the IAB logo in the middle.

Naaa never mind, to much work

[quote">Angel, the word is ruler, not rule. I know it's the same word in Spanish, but not in English.[/quote">

It's now a fairly archaic usage in English, but still correct. Hence, for example, "rule of thumb".

"The people who like crust can eat their crust. Those who don't want too much can eat the points and that leaves the soft, heavily topped middle to whomever gets it first."

I'd buy two. One cut like a penis and another like a boob. It would be oh so immature.

I wonder how far they would go. Do you think they would cut the pizza into letters. Say I buy four pizza and spell a dirty word, lol!

Well, that's not so bad actually. The people who like crust can eat their crust. Those who don't want too much can eat the points and that leaves the soft, heavily topped middle to whomever gets it first.

Everyone is happy.
