IamBored29: Because of their responsibilities to the public police need to be doing their jobs 'cleaner' than the average public. It's shady crap like you described that fosters disrespect for the police and puts their fellow officers in danger.

But actually I believe you are stating rumor rather than actual fact. Bribing a police officer is a felony and would've amounted to more than just 'desk time' if that person had been caught.
Trying to use the 'corrupt police' claim to argue against any one law fails miserably because it would mean that having any law at all would be useless. A smart cop, Corrupt or otherwise, Wouldn't do something that could be easily proven like racism, bigotry, or filing a false report.

@IamBored29- Sadly, police in this country have only themselves to blame for the contempt that a growing number of citizens feel towards them.

"What concerns me is, If you knew of 'shady practices' being done by officers you knew, Then why didn't you help in cleaning it up.

Unless of course you are making suppositions that are not based on first hand evidence. Which means that you were also using suppositions in your earlier comment. Just because a cop has the ability to do 'shady' things doesn't mean they will. Also, If they do, They will eventually get caught. Rotten cops don't last."

These shady practices are SOP in most depts. in the country and probably the world. Watching an officer drop off a case of wild turkey for extra overtime, if i had gone to IA or a superior it would've ended up a "he said-she said"...as most instances of "shady" practices. Ever file a complaint at a dept? They take it and "lose it"...as with most evidence against the dept itself. Your obvious contempt for me, police officers or both, in your tone is noted. ;)

@CrakrJak

"So keep 'covering up' for your buddies in blue eventually you'll get caught."

No where in my post did i condone any illegal activity on behalf of the police, I simply pointed out that just saying, "Cops arnt allowed to do that" doesnt mean they cant, or dont do it. Nice Try tho :)

Also, most departments have both an IA division and a CPB/CSM and some departments have 1 or the other. The problem is that both are pressured by the Police themselves to be "easy" on the offending officers whose punishment usually ends in desk duty or paid suspensions.

Not all police are bad, and coming from a family of well trained and well practiced officers I know a handful of bad apples can make the whole bunch look rotten.

I also made a point of stating that shady practices were part of the reason i decided not to further my career in Criminal Justice, however i ran out of space and the 2nd half of my comment was c

IamBored29: Then I'm sure you are aware of Internal Affairs and something called the Citizen Police Board, That the larger police departments have. Not to mention the feds investigate police departments as well.

So keep 'covering up' for your buddies in blue eventually you'll get caught.

Everybody should get a grip and stop trying to politicize a brain fart...it happens to everyone of every political ideology, career type, age, gender, nationality and religious creed. Have a laugh and move on.

B4 the conservative defense league on this site jumps all over me, i actually agree with tougher federal immigration laws, i just dont like the way the issue has been used as a political tool to drum up fear and win relection bids.

@CrakrJak "No cop can just stop you or me or anyone else without a valid reason."

POC- Yes they can and do, they just make up a "valid" reason on the spot. I watch them do it all the time to, and went through the process of learning how to do it in getting a criminal justice degree and going through the acad. We also learned how to "cover" for other officers who regularly "bend" the rules/break the law and how to "buy" overtime with cases of wild turkey delivered to the shift supervisor's office. To put it bluntly, Cops can and do just about anything they can get away with because we grant them that power without the proper checks and balances in place to "police the police". Just

"Illegals" What does that mean? I assume that it means 'an individual that isn't in the State legally'? Okay, I can see how that might work, but doesn't it have the element of "State"? If there is no "State", then there can be no "State" to be in or out off illegally or legally.

What facts or evidence does anyone have that might be able to prove the existence of "a State"?

The funniest thing about this loon is she uses the reputation of Phoenix as a well run city to her advantage. The reality is that her opponent Terry Goddard was the mayor that earned that very reputation. Nonetheless, I don't hold much hope for the future, as AZ is notorious for electing imbeciles for Guv. Google it, it's kinda funny in a pathetic way...

@duffy- ">>Wizard77 @duffy (and others) I was with you...until

No you weren't."

Yeah I was.

"Easily. SB1070 does not say "probable cause" (which has legal definitions), does not say "traffic stop" (which has definitions) - it says "lawful contact" WHICH COULD MEAN ANYTHING, as it has no legal definition. "

That is solid and engaging. But you are proving to be truculent and sort of sour. I am done listening to anything you have to say. If you were on solid ground you wouldn't need insults and direct contradiction to maintain an exchange.

duffytoler: No cop can just stop you or me or anyone else without a valid reason. Cops just don't go around asking everyone for their 'papers', You're really sounding paranoid if you believe they do. I mentioned profiling because the cops can't stop people based on their race either. There is already legal precedent for both of these based on the 4th amendment.

You're argument is that the phrase 'legal contact' creates some sort of loophole, But it can't because of already well settled and backed up law regarding how police do their job.

CrakrJak: I said nothing about "racial profiling" - before you accuse me of not looking at a bill I've just quoted from, maybe you should try LOOKING AT MY POST. At the risk of repeating myself, this is about "Stop and show me your papers!"

@davymid- I have come to respect your opinion in our exchanges. You are a pretty level headed guy and I bet we would get on well (despite what you think of me here) in real life. Now as to SP, what is the big deal? Seriously man, she made three bullet points on her hand? Really? Jeeze I cheated my way through collage because I was too busy chasing tail and drinking Fosters. Honestly, you wouldn't believe how tiny I can write and just how much I can fit on a matchbook sized bit of scrap paper.

So if you think she is lame, then cool,cool. Why though? If its over three basic reminders written on her hand...well. Look at any President or Prime Minister. They have a teleprompters and don't go off script unless they absolutely have no choice.

@duffy (and others) I was with you...until you started sounding like an abusive ass. In the first part (where you were worth listening to) you contend that "lawful contact" is too broad a term. CJ says that language in the bill addresses this.

Does the legal language appear in the bill because of probability? Or to appease the opponents of the bill?

look, I am a very white, English speaking, Black haired, green eyed, tall (obviously not mexican) guy. Of the states (about 31 now) Ive visited, I am required by law to have ID when in public. Why should visitors be exempt from this? I understand that it may be a "green card", workers visa or passport etc. But these are guests. How is their ID requirement less fair?

If you are going to go psycho and call names, don't bother answering. I have been on the fence but the supporters of the bill seem reasonable in their posts. If you have valid points make them. If you don't, you call names.

Man, let's give her a break. She was just reading her notes she had written on a page. At least she didn't have to jot down notes on her hand, like Sarah Palin did. I did that once, when I was 12.
