Yarrrpirate, you're right in your example that people will believe because they don't know any better, but people will believe even when they do know better.

atheism has become a religion, don't you see your hypocrisy?? "LOOK AT ME, I'M ATHEIST!!! YOU ALL ARE DUMB IF YOU DON'T BELIEVE LIKE ME"

how is this different than what you complain about??

I must have come over to your house and forced you to read IAB, and that must be why you think I am "forcing" anything down your throat.

No, you could not say the same about my opinion (that it is regurgitated). I have formed my opinions by keeping an open mind and thinking for myself. You and bordo respond straight out of the conservative playbook and it is easy for any rational person to tear holes in it.

I defy you to find any news channel, anywhere, that has taken up the Atheism banner. I can find you hours upon hours of Fox News clips that "inform" people as to what their opinions are without giving them any idea as to why they should believe it.

But if you think I'm a hypocrite, then please quote me saying one thing and then doing the opposite.

The same mantra could easily be said for opinions (especially anti-religious ones). Please stop trying to shove your hate of religion down my throat. Once you do we'll BOTH cease being hypocrites!

bordo, you don't have a very deep understanding of things do you? It is amazing how wrong you can be in so few words.

The L.A. seal and public schools are paid for by the government, which means (according to the Constitution) they shall not favor a religion. Has nothing to do with Atheism, or 3%, or 100%, or .000001%, or the Christian Cross, or a Satanic Pentagram, or the Muslim Crescent.

Would you like me to explain why Atheism isn't a religion? Maybe you can explain to me why you think my taxes should pay for your Christian Cross on the L.A. seal? Unless you'd rather explain your disdain for the U.S. Constitution? My guess is that you will pick none of the above and choose instead to spout some more of your not-very-well-thought-out ideas.

While you can probably point me to Fox News (the likely source of your regurgitated opinion), I'd be happy to point you to actual court decisions that back me up!

Also,

The fun part about this is if I were to sneak this into a bunch of illustrated bibles, put them in all in a vault and then wait till WW3 wipes out civilization, future Humans will definitely think Jesus had a pet dinosaur, and religions will be based entirely on the concept of Raptor Jesus. That's why it's entirely arbitrary. Why don't you believe in Baal? Because you happened to be born today.

My point is, religion is arbitrary and can therefore spin out of control (and it has). Science has some form of self-control and at least some degree of absolute fact, which is why it's preferable. Also, what good has religion brought to the world that any other organized effort couldn't have done?

Or that black and white are colors.

CrakrJak, I don't respond to strawmen, sorry.

@ Zeofar: So much better!!! While there would be wars without religion, scientific progress would probably end them eventually, and they wouldn't be so arbitrary.

>Nowadays, it's the atheists who are intent on cramming their religion (yes, atheism is a religion) down other people's throats.

That's akin to saying not collecting stamps is a hobby.

Hey NottaSpy, you can present all the facts you want. I'm talking about things like forcing, under threat of law suit, Los Angeles to change its official seal because it has a cross that covers less than 3% of the whole on it, acting like nuns being forced to watch gay porn every time there is a reference to belief in God in the schools and doing everything you can do to wipe out all acknowledgement of religion from the public square.

Oh sorry about that bordo. Us Atheists are pretty blatant about tossing around all those facts. We forget how that dose of reality gets stuck in your throat and prevents you from inhaling all that sweet, sweet ignorance.

Yarrrpirate, you appear to have cited the Crusades, Muslim terrorists, and, in general, religious war as an argument against religion. Did you ever stop to consider what exactly war would be like without the influence of religion(and philosophies that resemble religions), especially common religions? If Europe hadn't been settled down by a Christianity you can bet it would've been just as bad as the worst of the crusades, the Norman invasions (Not religiously motivated for the most part, but that's part of my point), or most any other senseless, murdering, genocidal hell of which you can think. The same goes for most parts of the world. As much as you say that religion's downfalls exceed its benefits, you don't seem to really consider what a world without religion might have been.

yarrrpirate: 300 years of science may have helped, But it took a cold war with an atheist oriented communist Russia to push America to plant it's flag on the moon. It was the biggest 'First!' in the history of mankind and was not merely done in the name of science alone, It was a propaganda win that America still enjoys the spoils of today.
