Monday, September 06, 2010 8:33:14 PM in a lot of other countries you're not to shake hands or eat with the left hand for that very reason, but I never really knew how the business was done. knowledge is power!! |

Friday, August 27, 2010 1:43:14 AM Givechase, that's actually the reason it's considered bad etiquette, since tp hasn't always been around. |

Thursday, August 26, 2010 10:01:52 PM Dominican Republic has basic out-houses which is just a hole, a structure which has a "toilet", and... a door. Exactly like regular toilets but without water. Hold your nose. :U |

Thursday, August 26, 2010 8:10:00 PM You're not supposed to shake hands with your left anyway, so those bad etiquette people deserve it!! Note to self: If you ever visit India... do not poop. |

Thursday, August 26, 2010 9:10:11 AM This isn't bad, really. It's your own waste, and you're just cleaning it right off. At least they really make the effort to get it clean. When you think about it, a lot of people who use Western toilets are probably less sanitary, actually, because, at least here in the U.S., there are tons of people who don't wash their hands afterwards. But even those who do.... Why is that? Oh, right. It's because we may have gotten waste on our hands in the process. So, with either method, you risk coming in contact with a person who's gotten some 'bathroom material' on them. I think, if you do your business correctly, both methods should be sanitary, lol. |

Thursday, August 26, 2010 7:19:23 AM this was facinating and discusting in equal measure. When can we see some more "sh*tting in other countries". Would be a great series, like "Bazar food" but "Bazar ways to sh*t". |

Thursday, August 26, 2010 6:26:28 AM It seems strange to me that Indian culture advocates that you avoid contact with left hands, yet locals spend so much time pressing their hands together (so anything on the left hand would be transferred to the right anyways) , that the entire exercise is pointless. |

Thursday, August 26, 2010 6:23:55 AM >>Well, I guess I'm never going to India. I'm left handed and I am assuming no one would be my friend. Whoa! Never thought about this. Lefties would be screwed.

Thursday, August 26, 2010 6:11:06 AM I too shall step in and provide some clarifications: 1. a majority of the toilets you'd find in cities would be western, and if you are visiting india, i'd assume you are living in a hotel. hotels always have toilet paper. 2. there's no such taboo associated with using your left hand for other things, not in cities at least. 3. remove the bigger particles of your sh*t without touching, by just throwing water on your butt. 4. the way with the soap is that you use your right hand to touch the soap to make a foam, and then clean the dirty hand with the foam. also, you don't use that soap for when you are taking a shower. All said and done, I would like to conclude by saying that I use toilet paper, because it doesn't make a mess in my bathroom. |

Thursday, August 26, 2010 4:22:17 AM nunki: Nobody's going to touch their butt and then go eat some food without making sure they are clean. That happens more often than you think, E. Coli, Thyphus, Diarrhea, Hepatitis, Cholera, and many others can all be spread through feces & improper/insufficient hand washing. Did you see a sink in that restroom to wash hands in ? No. Did you see any paper or towels to dry hands off with ? No. Was the communal soap he was using even clean itself ? No. 'Nuff said. |

Thursday, August 26, 2010 4:10:14 AM people have been wiping with their left hand for centuries, thats why you shake with your right. Royalty use to use lace instead of their hands. |

Thursday, August 26, 2010 2:41:41 AM First of all, when you squat like that, you don't really end up with a lot of poo on your bum bc ur pooing in a more natural position. No other animal other than humans goes poo while sitting down. The rest of the animal kingdom squats! So, basically you're just washing off whatever little residue may be there. And CrakrJak, there's nothing in that Wiki article that says anything about typhoid in India being related to washing with water as opposed to using toilet paper. I'm sure typhoid in developing countries has more to do with water quality control than anything. People aren't stupid. Nobody's going to touch their butt and then go eat some food without making sure they are clean.
