protip of the day: to catch a seagul wrap a piece of ham around a midweight rock about 1kg or so and throw in the air on the beach, a seagull will catch it and drop to the floor due to the new weight, run and catch it before it can fly away again... tasty tasty seagull |

How was I not being civil?
The kid looked horrified that he snagged a gull. It's not like he was playing with it. He was trying to get it off.
After a second look, I agree with your analysis of his fishing though. He was just pissing around. He should have been on a pier with that rod. That being said, he IS a kid. Not an experienced angler.
I'm still trying to figure out how I wasn't being civil?! :/ |

He's using a saltwater rod instead of a surfacasting rod, which tend to be a minimum of 9ft long so they can cast past the breakers, which he made no attempt to do. Also, when you surfcast, you don't stand 30ft away from the water's edge.
I see people all the time drating around on the beaches being careless, snagging other people, leaving hooks and discarded line in the sand, killing whatever their hooks grab and generally just being dicks. From what I see in this vid, I have a difficult time not counting him among them.
If you disagree with me, fine, but just because you disagree with someone doesn't mean they're stupid, so try being a bit civil, OK?

Oh, man...I saw this happen once while in the Navy. My friends and I were the reason no one can fish off the piers at the Naval Submarine Base in New London, CT.
Interestingly, seagulls are a protected species...damned if I know why. |

I hate it when people fish off the beach. I got hooked one time when I was swimming at the beach, because some f*cktard and his son ignored the huge "NO FISHING" signs. Hurt like hell and they made me feel like it was my fault! Plus, at most beches, all you are going to catch is grunion and seaweed anyway, so what's the point? |
