Next time I find myself in Berlin I will check it out. I applaud the narrator for sharing this video.

Meh. would be more interesting if they got someone like Billy Maze to narrate it.

Wow, what an amazing visual representation of radiation.

Also just a bit of info since nobody here really know what they're on about:

Alpha radiation is very ionising and very dangerous, although luckily it doesn't penetrate very far. The only place in the human body that is thin enough to be penetrated is your lungs, so as long as you don't breathe it in you should be ok. If you do though... :S

Beta radiation is less dangerous, but penetrates further. But as long as you're not too close to it there's not a lot to worry about, it won't get into your body.

Gamma radiation on the other hand is all around us and travels for miles. It can penetrate most things. It's mostly harmless though, unless you're exposed to high concentrated amounts it's nothing to worry about.

So really, unless you're exposed to high levels of radiation, it's not something to worry about. It's not like radioactive materials are extremely common anyway.

A primer on Alpha, Beta, Gamma radiation

Radiation Types

As you can see Alpha particles can be rather dangerous, Especially to your skin, Even though they don't penetrate very far.

Oh hang on, I think the radium was actually put in the chamber. In that case, it onto has a half life of 55 seconds which means it loses half of the radiation in that time. Then it takes another 55 seconds to lose half of THAT amount untill eventually it becomes a stable atom and not an ion. Still, if it breaks while it still is an ion, razordragon pretty much sums it up.

"But what do you do if the glass breaks and the radiation gets out?"

The radiation to begin with was background radiation. It's all around us anyway and has no harming effects on us.
Also, the radioactive elements she put into the container weren't permanantly in there but if they were, as long as you didn't swallow any alpha or beta sources, you'd be fine.
If it was a gamma source, you'd better run. Fast.

@ homegrown. Alpha and Beta radiation is nothing to worry about, they have barely any penetration power and do significinatly less damage to cells. It's gamma rad that you have to worry about.

More interesting than TV, least for the first few hours i'd say. But what do you do if the glass breaks and the radiation gets out?

Next step is to make a radioactive snowglobe.
