In fact with your plan there will be more animal suffering and disease because people with out a "license" will not take their pets to get shots and regular medical care, there will be more pets in the pound because it will be easier and cheaper to get them elsewhere, and there will still be just as many pets on the streets because you won't be able to enforce the law.

But I will tell you this, now that I am alive and old enough to vote, I would not support any legislation that would deprive animals of homes and health services which exactly what your "plan" would do.

"Funny you should mention choices considering that it was our choice to breed the hell out of cats and dogs and hand them out like candy for years and years... then wonder how it all went so terribly wrong. We did this to these animals... you and I and everyone else. We somehow accept it as the American way of life as if that is right at all. And then when it comes to tough choices to try to fix the problem for good, people who have weak stomachs can't do the hard thing. That's why nothing gets done in this country... people can't handle tough choices or tough actions. Go hug a drating tree hippie."

Well, actually it was not my choice to "breed the hell" out of animals, nor did I ever "hand them out like candy". As far as I know they didn't come around with a ballot box and ask me to vote on it. I am only responsible for my actions not for societies and if you believe I am then I think it is you who should be hugging the tree.

"Humans do make those sacrifices every single day. Hell, we sent in thousands of troops to fight in WW2 knowing many would die so we could put a stop to Germany. It's called acceptable losses."

"Yea but the difference is that humans have a choice."

Yea but the difference is that humans have a choice. Whether it is to ellect a congress that drafts them protect the country, to dodge the draft, or to enlist on their own. They also understand concepts that an animal does not, like sacrificing for the greater good. An animal only knows pain and death it knows nothing about causes. Besides that is hardly comparable. I would liken it more to letting Etheopians starve to death so that they didn't reproduce and have more hungry babies.

What would I do? What they are already doing but stepped up a notch like free or low cost spaying/neutering, the trap spay/neuter and release programs for strays and ferral animals, harsher penalties for those who abuse animals, and more education in schools about animal care. That is wha

"@splurbyburbl so we should decide to sacrafice the lives of animals now for the betterment of other animals later? Interesting logic for an "animal lover". I wonder if it would be so paletable if you applied it to humans."

I agree that it would cost a ton, and I didn't say it was the only answer, it was just an idea. At least I am giving new ideas. Some people are saying the answer is to "be responsible and to neuter your pets". Well... that has apparently been the "answer" and yet the problem gets worse by the day.

So what's your idea?

splurby what the hell are you on about. I don't have a pet now, but once I get into my apartment I'll be getting a cat or two... from a SHELTER. Encouraging (responsible) people to adopt from shelters where the animals are fixed is the best thing people can do. The problem is not pet owners-- it's the freaks who need "purebred" animals and stupid poo. They're not about giving an animal a home, they're about having some kind of status trophy.

Rather than bitch, why don't you go volunteer at a shelter and actually make a difference, instead of talking poo.

Plus, the whole idea is just absurd. You would never be able to enforce it and it would cost a fortune to try. Also, it would discourage people who owned "illegal" pets from getting the medical care that their pets need.

The point is a license and some classes aren't going to make things any different and it would cost to much money.

I can only imagine the mouse saw that the cat was legless, and decided to take advantage of the situation in some comical Tom and Jerry-esque way which went horribly wrong.

love it when the comments make me think. but not so much at 3:30 in the morning...i agree with needing more prerequisites before owning a pet and also agree about the rottweiler/bull mastiff in apartments is a pooty ass idea...but @splurbyburbl did i spell that right? life is precious even an animals life and you need to look at more of a pet's owner before you can proclaim a better way to do things AND getting personal when replying to their comment i think was because it's very important to them and they have a point of view you just don't seem to understand, lets see if anything i'm saying actually amkes sense in the morning :|

I mean look at the emmotional attachment you have to my comments. That's what your affinity for your pets do to you. It's great you love and take proper care for your animals, but when I say that people should have licenses and take training courses to own pets, you took it personal. How is proper training to care for animals a bad thing? Even if you don't need it because you have good sense just means taking a course and getting licensed would be a breeze.

Sometimes I think we have to go backwards a little in order to move forwards and in this case, I don't think we can do that without some animals suffering unfortunately. Although the relative few who would suffer now, would save countless in the future.

"@splurbyburbl: I take it your a member of PETA or the ALF, the people who feel all pets should be put down because its cruel to keep pets, who take pets to "find them homes" then kill them and dump their bodies in black plastic garbage bags into store dumpsters."

Not true, I think PETA are social terrorists. I am just saying that we as a society of pet owners are furthering those animals' own destruction. I am not targeting YOU, so get over yourself. I am targeting those who are ignorant on proper pet care. We are an irresponsible society when it comes to animals and it is hardly under control. Even good pet owners still compound the problem by adding to the whole "gotta -have- a-pet- to-be- complete" mentality. People see good pet owners and think it's easy, then go out, get a pet and the pet suffers. That's why I don't have pets.

"@splurbyburbl I think your logic still kind of fails. If people are required to get a license and take classes before they can own a pet then it is going to take even more time and money to adopt, which will discourage people from adopting (more put to sleep).

Also how would you enforce it and why would taking a class or requiring a license make someone a better pet owner? I've never taken a class and I am an outstanding pet owner."

I don't think so. True, it would suck and many animals would die, but that is our fault isn't it? Better to cause those many thousands to die now than perpetuate the millions to die over the coming years. And I am glad you are a good pet owner, but that shoe doesn't fit everyone. Anyone can own a gun, but the ones with the classes and the training know how to own it responsibly. Same logic with pets... hell, same logic with kids!

People like you seem to be make me sick, My "pets" are quite happy, all of them are fixed, and yeah, I let the cat roam the neighbour hood at will, as do ALL but 1 of my neighbours, and she only keeps her cat in because shes paranoid it will run away on her and its her only friend....(no, not kidding)

I do feel that alot of people shouldnt be allowed pets, and there SHOULD be some rules about getting pets.

one being that you cant get a big dog if you dont have a damn yard for it to run around in.....bloody idiots with a studio appt or the like who get rotties or bull mastiffs.....ticks me off.

or people who get farrets and dump them because they need alot of attn and love
