Sunday, August 08, 2010 4:08:50 AM 100%+ MIGHT occur, if, say, you were working overtime. You could be working 120% of the hours expected. The same goes for efficiency, in many cases, as efficiency could be measured as successes/failures in percent form. However, being sure of something is a case whereinshich it is, per definition, simply impossible to be more than 100% sure. In this case, my perverted mind reads the statement above as she is sure that her fiancé more than "just" being the father to the child in question. O.O' Freaky. Say no more. |

Sunday, August 08, 2010 12:56:18 AM also, angilion giving your work 110% is not really incorrect for a couple reasons. First, it's a phrase that carries meaning in its connotation rather than its denotation. Secondly, you could argue that 100% is only a theoretical limit of ones abilities and that if performance were to exceeded those expected capabilities, your performance would indeed be above 100% in reference to the theoretical limit. I don't like the phrase ether by the way. |

Sunday, August 08, 2010 12:49:45 AM id just like to point out that when it comes to percents, odds are a special case and not the norm. A percent, in general, can have any value numerator with a denominator of 100, or per 100. Also i don't find it to be that surprising or such a big deal that someone might not be aware of this. |

Sunday, August 08, 2010 12:12:00 AM Wait, so what's the problem? If she's so sure that the baby is her fiance's, then what's wrong? 'percent' is very directly from Latin. 'per centum' = 'from a hundred'. So it is almost always wrong to refer to anything over 100%. It can only be right when comparing two amounts, e.g. a weight being 120% of the rated load for a crane or something. If you are utterly sure of something to the greatest possible extent, with absolutely no margin for error at all, not even the vaguest, most ridiculously small possibility of it not being true, then you are 100% sure of it. You cannot be more than 100% sure of anthing, ever, under any circumstances. It is impossible by definition - you cannot be more than 100 parts in 100 sure of something. Similarly, you can't give more than 100% effort or more than 100% attention or more than 100% anything - *that's what 100% means*. |

Sunday, August 08, 2010 12:02:11 AM This is a pet peeve of mine. Not as much as a trillion, but over and over again I read or hear people making the same mistake. Gonna give it 110% in the next match/next week on Hell's Kitchen/at work/whatever. Aaarrrggghhhh! Ignornant burblers! |
