It's worse if you're British. Apparently across the pond, "fanny" means "vagina".
Yes, it does. Either that or a woman's genitals in general - slang generally doesn't distinguish between the two. Maybe not just across the pond - I think it has the same meaning in Canada.
An American I know a little once told some other people that she'd been riding all day and her fanny was sore. Perfectly reasonable American English statement after spending all day on horseback...but the other people weren't from the USA. |

Indeed, a fanny in the UK is (quite polite) slang for a vagina. I remember well being in an auditorium in Disneyworld waiting for the show to start, when one of the Disney staff members made an announcement that someone in the previous audience had left something behind... he asked us all to check under our seats for a purple fanny pack. Much snickering was to be heard amongst the sizable British contingent in the theatre...
Ah yes, adventures in mistranslation. Closest I ever came to being murdered (bearing in mind I grew up in Belfast, Northern Ireland) was in a sports bar in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Forgetting where I was for a second, I asked a burly trucker at the bar if there was "any chance I could bum a fag"... But that's another story. |
