Thursday, August 05, 2010 8:13:44 PM yea actually - the more literal translations are brutal. newer translations/presentations have softened it up a bit. i guess they think we cant handle the truth... ;) |

Tuesday, August 03, 2010 2:01:54 AM I'll bet that 99% of the general public have never heard or read the original versions of fairy tales, only the hollywood/disney/americanised/commercial versions. All you have to do is read Roald Dahl to learn that violence and squick is the name of the game. Hell, read Robin Jarvis books or watch The Animals of Farthing Wood for more recent examples. |

Monday, August 02, 2010 9:46:55 PM That's how the original ended, no joke. I think cracked.com has a list devoted to stories that were way more horrifying before Disney upchucked them and added singing crabs. |

Monday, August 02, 2010 5:53:06 PM The Grimm tales are so violent and graphic because the serve a purpose. They were tales that people read so they could see just how good their lives are compared to the main characters in the fairy tales, which usually wasn't much better if you lived in poverty during the 1800's. When the standard of living got better the need for the grusome Grimm tales fell through, because people wanted to read happier stories. |

Monday, August 02, 2010 9:01:56 AM Fairy tales aren't *getting* pointlessly violent. They WERE pointlessly violent and've since become doe-eyed and G-rated. True that, just read the original version of the little mermaid for instance, I cannot believe kids read that back in those days.

Monday, August 02, 2010 8:34:46 AM And Lamiacraor... You've actually read the original stories, right? Because for the record, they generally teach lessons such as: ~Don't talk back to your father, for he reserves the right to trade you for a dairy cow.~ By today's standards, not only do they often *not* make sense, but the majority of the time they're just downright ridiculous and/or heinous. And besides that... You think you'd really know who Cinderella or Snow White even WERE if it wasn't for Disney? Disney may have changed them, but they kept the stories alive, and went as far as to give them a heart and soul. To be completely honest (although I do enjoy them) I think the actual Grimm tales are barely a fraction of a shadow compared to what Disney made out of them. |

Sunday, August 01, 2010 2:26:29 PM yeah, fairy-tales were historically bloody. Cinderella's step-sisters cut off part of their feet trying to get into the glass slipper is another obvious ones. Most fairy tales aren't even published anymore, due to lack of literacy and being made into sanitized Disney movies. |

Sunday, August 01, 2010 12:52:59 PM Oh yes, thats right! But I had the Struwulpeter books too- scared the crap out of me- I swear my behaviour improved by seeing the cover. At least our dreams were not dashed on adulthood though- I knew how ghastly it could be, and am very happy not to have to dance in iron boots! |
