Sunday, July 25, 2010 7:41:29 AM "the only different between african-american and caucasian skin is the gene that puts out the amount of melanin" No. There's more difference than a single gene between my skin color and the skin color of my brother. There's about 5 gene pairs inherited per parent (give or take, depending on race). The combined 10 gene pairs have thousands of combinations that can alter the appearance of skin. |

Saturday, July 24, 2010 6:03:57 PM the only different between african-american and caucasian skin is the gene that puts out the amount of melanin. which i thought was just a single gene, No, it's not that simple. Which is a good summary of genetics, really. Find an answer, look in more detail and find that it's not that simple. If I recall correctly, about a dozen genes are involved in human skin colour. At least, that's what is currently thought. It probably isn't that simple. |

Saturday, July 24, 2010 9:50:29 AM the only different between african-american and caucasian skin is the gene that puts out the amount of melanin. which i thought was just a single gene, so if you have a mutation in that gene wich happens = not very often but mutations do happen. and then the difference in types of hair is just ammounts of hydrogen bonds making it kink or straighten which i thought was a single gene too. along with the blond hair. so the baby getting all of these mutations is quite random, but thats why this baby is the first one weve heard of and was such a great news story i suppose. because you can see different features from both of the parents. have they done a paternity test to prove it? |

Saturday, July 24, 2010 12:02:23 AM This sort of thing can just happen. I still don't see the big deal over this. Two people whose genetic makeup gave them dark hair, dark eyes, and dark skin had a baby whose genetic makeup gave him/her lite hair, eyes, and skin. Basically, people are in an up-roar because two people bumped uglies and pushed out a kid. |

Friday, July 23, 2010 10:44:41 PM It is a very slim genetic chance that this happened. But still possible. Light skin and blonde hair are recessive. If both parents have these genes, it is a possibility random freak occurance for this to happen. |

Friday, July 23, 2010 8:24:56 PM Well, something is up with the genetics with the baby that are responsible for production of Melanin in the hair and skin. Not necessarily Albinism but some other disorder. Hundreds of millions of people have skin that sort of colour - is it still a disorder when it's that common? I'd assumed that the lightening of skin in humans as an adaptation to a northern climate took place over a long time, a lightening from generation to generation, but that's just my assumption. Maybe it happened like this and flourished because it was useful there and then and/or because it was for some reason considered highly desirable. If it did happen this suddenly back then, that that person would have stood out a mile. |

Friday, July 23, 2010 8:14:30 PM She could be a black-albino mix? It doesn't work that way. Albinism is a recessive genetic disorder. You either have it or you don't. No half measures. It would be possible for both her parents to be carrying the gene for albinism (it's recessive, so they could each have one copy without any effects) and thus possible for them to have an albino child, but it's been repeatedly stated that this isn't what has happened. You can test for albinism - I assume that's been done as it's been repeatedly stated that she doesn't have it. |
