Saturday, July 03, 2010 10:00:30 PM The answer to that is well known - rugby is a spinoff from football. Rugby is never called football, though, so it's not the same situation as American football. Strictly speaking it's Rugby rules football, but it's never called that either. Rugby or (rarely) rugby football, but never just football. |

Saturday, July 03, 2010 9:08:58 PM So if American football, Canadian football and Australian Football are all variations of Rugby football, I think the question we need to ask is "how come rugby is football?" |

Saturday, July 03, 2010 3:25:04 PM Rugby impact forces are the same as American Football levels, so the padding makes it less painful. You have never seen professional rugby if you think they are more in American Football. I have seen professional rugby. I've played rugby. I've seen the results of experiments measuring impact forces for rugby and on the outside of the padding for American football. I am confident that I am right and you are wrong. |

Saturday, July 03, 2010 1:57:12 PM Wow... This is a laod of bullcrap IMO. Soccer is the American word for it, Football is the British word for it. (I hate the word British because for some reason Americans insist on calling me British even though I'm ENGLISH). I know many British people are snooty towards the American way of calling it soccer but the Sun, Daily Mail, all those tabloids DO NOT give the view of a nation. They give the view of stuck up, ignorant people who just want to have an argument. I have no idea why Americans seem to think that Britain has something against them. But it annoys me a hell of a lot. I'm not a fan of the sport so I don't really care. But Football makes a hell of a lot more sense than Soccer does. Also most of the world calls it football. Russia, France, Spain, Portugal, all Spanish speaking countries. It isn't just Britain that calls it Football. |

Saturday, July 03, 2010 12:24:36 PM it's cause stupid yanks have an idiotic whimpy game and call it football Wimpy? The clue train didn't stop at your station, did it? There are plenty of things to complain about with American football, chief of which is how little of any given match is actually played (play for a minute...wait...wait...wait...aha, another minute...wait...wait...wait) but it's definitely a hard sport. The armour drops the impact forces down to roughly rugby levels, so you're still going to get hurt. |

Saturday, July 03, 2010 7:14:08 AM American football (aka "football") is a variation of Rugby football (aka "Rugby"). Properly, it's "American Rules Football", just as there's "Australian Rules Football", and "Canadian Rules Football" (all of which are Rugby variants). Those became shortened to just "football". |

Saturday, July 03, 2010 6:36:17 AM Why is that game in the United states called football? You know the game where people run into eachother. They barely use their feet to kick the ball. Or am I wrong because I have never seen American Football. |

Saturday, July 03, 2010 5:24:29 AM @zepth, if you really think professional football (NFL) is whimpy, you must be drating Chuck Norris or something. It'd probably kill you if you got tackled by a 300 lbs linebacker. drating stupid ass brit. |

Saturday, July 03, 2010 5:12:54 AM That article was way too long. I learned that it used to be called 'Association Football,' by them Brits, then to shorten that up it morphed into 'Assoc.' which then turned into 'soccer' from 'soc.' I call it soccer. Because it's how I learned what the freakin' game was. Even whenever I try and call it football, I can't seem to help but imagine the NFL. Everyone knows what 'soccer' is. While using 'football' you have to specify /which/ football you mean. Which takes up far too much time when you're busy cringing at the television screen. |
