It's far worse than I'd imagined - how is this mess going to be cleaned up?

This is why we need to end our dependence on ALL oil... or at least as much as is possible

Personally I don't give two craps about the environment. At the same time I'd be more than happy for us to stop using oil, as long as the alternative is cheaper and convenient.

PunkAsf82 I was wondering if the oil on your beach was actually thisrather than oil travelling 4500 miles from the gulf of mexico

If only it was easy to ban oil use...

We won't see independence from oil for a long, long time. Oil is the only real constant in the economies of too many countries.

I was down the beach the other day, I live on the south coast of England, and the oil has already started to effect us. Our main ocean current comes straight from the gulf of Mexico, and already our beach has a thin layer of oil slicked all over the sand and in the water. Already birds and other animals are being bought in covered in oil, and this is just the start. This will effect the whole world, not just America!

vv "To say that consumers are not to blame, when the oil industry is simply fulfilling a need in world demand (at a profit, of course, no-one would deny that), I find a bit confusing. "

Incredibly vast oversimplification of a complex market and industry."

---------------
I know. I work in that industry. Oversimplification was exactly what I was aiming for, because (at risk of sounding like an ass), that's the only language that your average joe will understand, who's not involved in that industry. See my response to the call to boycott BP gas stations a few posts below this one.

I understand the complexity of the oil industry pretty well, having worked in it for all my professional life. In fact, see this article, which I helped compile.

davymid, it's straight up BPs fault. they know what happens when an underwater oil pipe breaks, they should have had an 'oh fu-k' plan. Every other large company has an 'incase this happens, we do this and it will all be good' guideline set up. BP just dropped the ball and most of the world knows it.

Agreed, it is BP's fault. Not trying to reapportion blame here. But to think that the other oil companies do things fundamentally differently from BP is a fallacy. Any oil company would have this same clusterf*ck on any given sunday.
